SOURCE TRINIDAD EXPRESS: Joel Julien- A CARIBBEAN Airlines flight from Kingston, Jamaica, landed at New York’s John F Kennedy International Airport on Saturday with one extra passenger after a baby was born mid-flight.

Caribbean Airlines confirmed yesterday that the “medical event” occurred on flight BW005, stating that “a passenger gave birth while en route.”

“Upon arrival, the mother and newborn were attended to by medical personnel and are receiving the necessary care,” Caribbean Airlines stated.

“The airline commends the professionalism and measured response of its crew, who managed the situation in accordance with established procedures, ensuring the safety and comfort of all onboard,” it stated.

Caribbean Airlines also confirmed that no emergency was declared during the flight.

“We respectfully ask that the privacy of the passenger and her family be observed at this time,” Caribbean Airlines stated.

Saturday’s birth is not the first time a baby has been born on a flight flying to JFK.

In 2005, 33-year-old Candy Midtlyng gave birth about 10 minutes before landing at JFK on a BWIA West Indies Airways flight.

The baby had given the name “Baby Bwee” by Immigration officials.

According to its website Caribbean Airlines welcomes pregnant customers onboard without medical clearance through the end of their 32nd week of pregnancy.

“Expectant mothers will be accepted for travel without medical clearance up and to the end of the 32nd week of pregnancy. However, we recommend that you obtain a doctor’s statement verifying the expected date of confinement to prevent the possibility of being denied boarding by check-in staff or barred from entering the destination country by immigration. Between the 32nd and 35th week, medical clearance is mandatory. The medical certificate should state:

The confirmation of a normal pregnancy;

The estimated date of confinement;

That you are in good health;

That there is no known reason which would prevent you from flying,” the website states.

“In all cases we suggest that you consult your OB-GYN before planning your trip. Expectant mothers will not be accepted for travel after the 35th week of pregnancy,” it stated.
