Autoimmune disorder warning added to AstraZeneca, J&J vaccines

Health Canada is updating the labels for the AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccines to add immune thrombocytopenia (ITP), an autoimmune condition, as a potential side effect.

In a statement on Tuesday, the agency said very rare cases of ITP have been reported internationally after receiving the Vaxzevria (AstraZeneca) and Janssen (J&J) COVID-19 vaccines.

ITP is a disorder that can cause easy or excessive bruising and bleeding, which results from unusually low blood platelet levels.

Such cases typically occur within 28 days after vaccination, the agency said. Deaths as a result of post-vaccination ITP have been reported outside of Canada. Some cases occurred in individuals who had a prior history of the disorder.

Both the AstraZeneca and J&J vaccines have been approved for use in Canada and are deemed safe and effective.

The agency advised Canadians to seek immediate medical attention if any of the following symptoms occurred after receiving the AstraZeneca and J&J shots:

  • unexplained bleeding
  • unexplained bruising
  • small purplish spots beyond the site of vaccination
  • shortness of breath
  • chest pain
  • leg pain and/or swelling
  • persistent abdominal pain.

Health Canada said if an individual has a history of a thrombocytopenic disorder, such as immune thrombocytopenia, the risk of developing low platelet levels should be considered before administering the vaccine and platelet monitoring is recommended after vaccination.

In its label update on Tuesday, the agency said there was also the rare risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE) – a type of blood clot that starts in the vein – following vaccination with the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.

More than 224,000 Canadians have received two doses of the AstraZeneca Vaxzevria COVID-19 vaccine and more than 9,000 have received the single-shot J&J vaccine.

In March, Health Canada added a warning about blood clots to the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine following several reports after immunization.

In June, the agency updated the label for the Oxford-AstraZeneca and Covishield COVID-19 vaccines to also add capillary leak syndrome as a potential side-effect.

  1. VERY rare
NOT Covishield that was administered in Antigua

Please weigh up benefits of massively reduced hospitalizations & deaths in fully vax individuals globally versus unvaccinated.

To travel it is becoming increasingly required to be vaccinated, USA included.

  2. They keep saying it’s very rare. How rare is rare? How come they only provide data on success rates? Anyway…as they said, it’s very rare. Reminds me of something else that is extremely rare…in fact the vast majority of persons may only experience it once in their entire lifetime – death.

  3. People must remember that we are only about two years into this entire disaster. The vaccines just rolled out less than a full year ago. Its something new every month bcuz these things are EXPERIMENTAL. They are experimenting with the human genome and people are being FORCED to be apart of experiments while scientists, politicians and big tech play with human lives. Can’t be that rare so early into this pandemic. These things should NOT be forced.

    • I am not anti-vaxx but this is exactly why I haven’t taken any covid vaccines as yet. New drugs and vaccines take years of clinical testing to determine all of the adverse side effects. So this whole time has been one big clinical testing period. Expect to hear about many more adverse reactions before all is said and done.

      • I personally only took the vax because I was forced to do so to be able to work to take care of my family. I accept that the future is uncertain either way. Getting Covid is a risk. Taking the vaccine is also a risk. If I only have a couple of years left on earth before coming down with adverse effects, I will spend it trying my best to take care of the little ones and then go home to meet my maker in peace.

If you are fortunate to not have to take it and feel that you in a low risk group for severe effects from Covid then it is perfectly understandable if you want to wait a bit longer to make a decision based on informed consent.

Persons should be free to make such a choice for themselves. The vaccine might or might not save lives in the short term but we also risk destroying freedoms for the next generation by starting down this dictatorial forced vaccine path in society.

      • The insert for the Pfizer vaccine says that the list of side effects is not complete and is still being determined in trials.

      • They are experimenting with peoples lives! They are updating side effects monthly. Its an experiment. A human experiment! More people have been dying AFTER the arrival of vaccines. They have yet to prove that these EXPERIMENTAL drugs are safe and effective.

Forcing people to take a drug and updating side effects as they come out this early into the pandemic is morally bankrupt.

      • @SayWhat The internet is full of articles on “Why mRNA Vaccines Can’t Change Your Genome” but only Pfizer and Moderna are mRNA vaccines.

Most adults in the developing world and poor communities in the first world have been taking viral vector vaccines such as AstraZenica and Janssen that interact with DNA directly. Where are the articles assuring us that those are safe in the long term? How do we know that our cells are not becoming little spike protein factories etc. If you can find reassuring articles on those, I would greatly appreciate that.

    • Wait til you hear what it does to the proteins the cells use to repair themselves from errors in their DNA

    • @rudegyal..A study was done by MIT & Harvard that supports your argument.

MIT & HARVARD Study Suggests mRNA Vaccines Might Permanently Alter DNA After All

  4. People need to read these articles more carefully- it’s a rare side effect coming from Canada authorities who were the slowest to open back up their country. All medications have rare side effects- go read your aspirin, Cough syrup etc medicine and see all the side effects that could kill you…

    • If we were a decade into the pandemic, you could “sensibly” call it rare. Less than a year in, with such dangerous side effects cannot be counted as rare. Keep trying to justify this evil.

  5. Experimental mi foot! How many people in Antigua have taken the vaccines? Did you hear of anyone turning into a monkey? Have you heard of anyone suffering with any of these life threatening side effects?
The Americans, Europeans and the Canadians use a lot of chemicals in their daily intake of food and as a consequence, they will have all these reactions from the vaccines even though the side effects are minuscule.
The vaccines are safe and they prevent deaths and hospitalization. GET VACCINATED AND IGNORE THE DUMB AND IGNORANT ONES WHO CHOOSE NOT TO BE VACCINATED. I do hope that the Government would provide Pfizer as the vaccine for the booster.

    • You say this as if it’s a certainty. I hope you are this confident and keep this same energy when information comes out about more adverse reactions.
