Authorities Urge Public Caution Amid Reports of Attempted Child Abductions
Authorities in Antigua and Barbuda have urged the public to exercise caution amid growing concerns over attempted child abductions, following a series of disturbing reports in recent days.
During the Post-Cabinet Media Briefing, Chief of Staff Ambassador Lionel Hurst confirmed that law enforcement is actively investigating the reports and has increased security measures to protect children.
“We are taking these incidents very seriously and are asking the public to remain vigilant. The police are working proactively to prevent any further threats,” Hurst stated.
Police Intensify Efforts to Protect Children
The Royal Police Force of Antigua and Barbuda has deployed plainclothes officers around schools and public spaces frequented by children. Authorities are also expanding the use of security cameras near schools and have urged community members to report any suspicious activity.
Additionally, the government has accelerated plans to introduce the ‘Chantel Alert’, a national emergency notification system that will issue urgent alerts in cases of suspected child abductions.
Hurst emphasized that while police investigations are ongoing, details cannot always be shared immediately to avoid compromising law enforcement efforts.
Public Concern and Calls for Action
The recent cases have sparked widespread concern among parents and educators, with many calling for stricter child protection measures and a greater police presence in school zones.
Community activists have also urged the government to introduce public education campaigns on child safety, emphasizing the need for children to be taught how to identify and react to potential threats.
Authorities have assured the public that they are taking every precaution to address the situation and prevent further incidents, while also reminding citizens to avoid spreading unverified claims on social media that could hinder police investigations.
With child safety now a national priority, officials are urging parents, teachers, and law enforcement to work together in strengthening protective measures for Antigua and Barbuda’s children.
