Antigua and Barbuda: No Tsunami Threat Following Honduras Earthquake
Authorities in Antigua and Barbuda have confirmed there is no tsunami threat to the twin-island nation following a powerful 8.0-magnitude earthquake that struck north of Honduras on Saturday evening.
According to a Tsunami Information Statement issued by the Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Service and the National Office of Disaster Services (NODS), the earthquake occurred at 7:23 pm AST (2323 UTC) on February 8, 2025, at a depth of 33 km (20 miles).
While there is no significant tsunami threat to Antigua and Barbuda, officials noted the small possibility of minor tsunami waves along Caribbean coastlines closer to the earthquake’s epicentre.
No Action Required, But Vigilance Urged
Officials have advised residents that no immediate action is required. However, they encourage the public to stay informed through updates from the Met Service and other official channels.
“This is a good time to review your tsunami evacuation plans and ensure familiarity with designated safe areas, particularly in coastal zones,” the statement added.
The update also noted that this will be the only statement issued unless new data emerge or the situation changes.
