AT&LU President Pledges to Defend Grassroots and Migrant Workers

The president of the Antigua and Barbuda Trades and Labour Union (AT&LU), Bernard de Nully, has pledged to expand protection for some of the country’s most vulnerable workers, including migrants, construction labourers and domestic employees.

Speaking at the union’s 86th Annual Delegates’ Conference, de Nully warned that exploitation remained a pressing issue in Antigua and Barbuda’s labour market.

He said too many employers were failing to honour minimum wage laws, pension payments and sick leave entitlements, while cases of harassment and constructive dismissal were on the rise.

“Social injustice in this country is real,” de Nully told delegates, adding that the union would continue to act as “the advocate for informal workers such as domestic workers, construction workers, and migrant workers.”

The president noted that members of Antigua’s Spanish-speaking construction community had repeatedly raised concerns over unpaid vacation and overtime, underscoring the urgent need for greater vigilance and union involvement.

De Nully linked these issues to the broader theme of the conference — Remaining United Amid Global Uncertainties and Economic Challenges — saying the union’s mandate was to defend grassroots workers as a matter of social justice and national stability.

The pledge comes as the AT&LU continues its wider campaigns for improved workplace safety, collective bargaining, and the timely payment of pensions and Social Security benefits.
