Astaphan Questions Lovell’s Political Comeback

Senior Counsel Anthony Astaphan has cast doubt on the United Progressive Party’s (UPP) decision to welcome back former leader Harold Lovell, who recently announced his intention to contest the All Saints West seat.

Astaphan said he was surprised by Lovell’s return, arguing that the UPP should have turned to “new faces, new voices” to attract younger voters. He criticised the party for clinging to what he described as “an old message” that may no longer resonate with the electorate.

Lovell, who retired from politics in 2023 after a narrow defeat in St John’s City East, said he was persuaded to return following calls from supporters and former caretaker Barbara Coates. Political analyst Peter Wickham has expressed optimism about Lovell’s chances, noting shifting dynamics after Anthony Smith’s departure from the UPP.

But Astaphan questioned Lovell’s track record, recalling his tenure as finance minister during the IMF bailout, and drew a sharp contrast with Prime Minister Gaston Browne’s handling of crises such as the pandemic and Barbuda recovery. He also suggested speculation over Lovell reclaiming leadership would be a test for the party.

  1. ASStaphan needs to go back to Dominica and keep out of Antigua business! Focus on why your island is still so undeveloped.

  2. Good Question. SIR LESTER BIRD is the real “Come Back Kid”

Lovell done get blow fu bang darg!!!! LOSER LOVELL trying to upstage Pringle, but e nar work.

  3. How much did this lawyer get from the alpha Nargo deal again?? Looks like he is still working for it, or expect to get even more of our money.

  4. I think that Harold contesting leadership is going to drive the wedge deeper into the party and will cause more people to leave.

Right now I am sure that secret alliances are already been made and secrecy is a hell of a dangerous thing.

The country is watching but we already know what is going to happen.

    • well I know that the “CHAOS DEMON” will not sit back and allow Limpy Joe to spoil her chance of becoming the next Prime Minister!

She didn’t come this far to only come this far. Limpy Joe already had 7 chances and lost the overwhelming majority of times.

As for Richard Lewis, his days are numbered. He marry the wrong nationality and will forever be punished by the party for that “unholy alliance”.

  5. Who the hell is AstaFART to question Lovell’s decisions.
Why is he inherently jn antigua?
His advise to the government lead to the cou try competing with Haiti for bottom of the barrel.
His opinion is not solicited so let him keep it in his head.
He is not a Dominican by birth.
After he has bankrupted Dominica and now Antigua of both ideas and resource he will run to his native land.
Dominica and Antigua are both better off without him.
Man go fix your jaw bone!!!!!

  6. In the year 2025 it does us no good to be hurling insults and expletives at each other. There are arguments to be made for and against the re-entry of Mr. Lovell into active politics. As a citizen and a member of the UPP that’s that’s his and the party’s perogative. Mr. Astafan also has a right to his opinion. It is time we as a people raise þe level of our discourse.

  7. My, my, my, they are all coming out of the woodwork now. I didn’t think this political retiree still had any skin in the game. This response just goes to show that there are – known and unknown – forces out there to destabilise the opposition whenever they look like becoming strong once more.

By Astaphan entering the arena as well, just goes to show that the Most Honourable Harold Lovell is continuing to ruffle many ABLP supporters feathers.

I’ll admit, it’s great to be a UPP supporter at present.

Has it been a week yet since Mr Harold ‘Prodigal Son’ Lovell announced his return?

Wow, if he can DISCOMBOBULATE the ABLP in such a short space of time, then just imagine what he (and the UPP) achieve in the run-up to the next General Election?

Exciting times ahead for the country folks!

ABLP, please keep on with your “wailing and nashing” of teeth.

Gaston Browne’s fleeting attempt at a one-party state looks like its going up in smoke …

  8. Lovell did not lost in the last General election! That seat was stolen from him. Ask school children and they will tell u what exactly happened

  9. How much is Mr. Weasel being paid for his opinion? He seems to come around when the ALP is incapable of managing a worrisome issue. Why isn’t he questioning the decision made by his Handler to “hide Lester Bird from the people ‘ when he knew that he had a stroke and his refusal to retire Robin Yearwood and allow the constituents of St. Philips North to choose a Parliamentary Representative?

  10. Yeah we out here questioning why is he always around, no work in St.Kitts and Dominica for you to do sir? Asking for a nation.

  11. @Lovell did not LOST

Go back to primary school. You and CA-CAPA-TI-TAH, DEAD DARG PICK-UP-CORN PRINGLE in the same boat.

Take up your gripe with Electoral Commission 🤡

  12. While I respect Mr. Lovell’s dedication to public service, it’s important for the UPP to consider the need for fresh leadership and new ideas that can engage our young voters. The party must focus on building a strong, inclusive vision that addresses the concerns of all constituents, while ensuring experienced voices like Mr. Lovell’s complement rather than overshadow emerging talent

  13. Toney ….., why would you say that … you are so lost in the fog behind Gaston behind 💨.. “GET IT? Stop licking Gaston’s behind … you are a -up lawyer who trying to stay relevant by voicing your one sided opinion about who’s washed up .. you got some nerve .. here’s some toilet paper to wipe your mouth from licking the behind 🧻 LET ME BE KIND.. NEVERMIND..
