Standing before a grieving congregation, former MP Dr. Errol Cort paid tribute to Asot Michael, describing him as “a beacon of hope for many” and reflecting on his legacy as a dedicated public servant and passionate advocate for the people of St. Peter.
“Today, we gather to honor the life and legacy of a man whose impact resonates far beyond his years,” Dr. Cort began. “Asot Anthony Emmanuel Michael dedicated his life to serving others, always striving to uplift those who needed it most.”
Dr. Cort, who first met Michael over 35 years ago in a professional capacity, spoke about the beginnings of their friendship and Michael’s early foray into public service.
“I witnessed his transition from studying law in England to returning home to commence a life of service,” he said. “His entry into public life was not just a career choice; it was a calling.”
Michael’s political career began long before his election to Parliament in 2004. As Chief of Staff in the Office of the Prime Minister and later as a senator and Minister of State, he laid the groundwork for his lifelong commitment to Antigua and Barbuda.
“By the time he entered elected politics, it was simply a continuation of his dedication to the people,” Dr. Cort said.
During his tenure as Minister of Tourism, Economic Development, Investments, and Energy, Michael’s leadership propelled Antigua and Barbuda’s tourism sector to new heights. He was named the “Best Tourism Minister in the Caribbean” in 2016, a testament to his vision and effectiveness.
“In every position he held, Asot exemplified service, efficiency, and leadership,” Dr. Cort remarked. “His parliamentary contributions were spirited, well-researched, and always centered on the needs of the people.”
Dr. Cort shared Michael’s love for the nation’s cultural traditions. “Asot found joy in Carnival, steel pan, and calypso,” he said. “Whether it was J’ouvert morning or a Carnival breakfast fete, he was in his element—living, laughing, and sharing that joy with everyone around him.”
His passion for culture extended to building personal connections. “He had the unique ability to connect with people from all walks of life, always making them feel valued,” Dr. Cort shared.
While reflecting on Michael’s flaws, Dr. Cort invoked scripture: “Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.” He described Michael as a man unafraid to admit his mistakes and seek reconciliation.
“This unique trait made it difficult for anyone to hold a grudge against him,” Dr. Cort noted. “Asot’s heart was always in the right place, and his genuine care for people shone through.”
Dr. Cort closed his tribute by focusing on the importance of Michael’s contributions and the lives he touched. “Asot’s legacy is defined by his love for his community and his unwavering belief in the potential of our nation,” he said. “His life was a testament to the power of service and compassion.”
Addressing his late friend, Dr. Cort said, “Rest in peace, my dear brother. Your spirit will live on in the hearts of those you served, and your legacy will continue to inspire future generations.”

The fact he felt the need to say this…
“This unique trait makes it difficult for anyone to hold a grudge against him”,except who fought him fiercely even through death. If he had the authority to erase his memory, that surely would have happened. For him, power is like adrenaline but time is the ultimate ruler. “Let he who is without sin cast the first stone”.
Good on you for bailing out the sinking UPP ship bright and early.
