Antigua and Barbuda’s fire authorities are alarmed by a string of intentionally set fires in abandoned structures across the country, suspected to be the work of arsonists.

The latest incident involved the destruction of a wooden structure at the junction of North and Popeshead Street, despite the swift response of the St. John’s Fire Brigade at approximately 5:45 pm.

The cause of the fire remains unknown, but fire officers have observed that abandoned houses are frequented by vagrants.

This occurrence emphasizes the importance of community vigilance, especially for structures lacking electricity, to prevent further fires. Collaborative efforts are crucial to maintaining community safety and security.

  1. Arson is not just something that we hear about on the news. We have been witnessing it in real time recently. The key to protecting your building from arson is to make it a less appealing target for a would be firestarter. Regrettably there are too many abandoned buildings in the city and it’s environs that have become a prime target for arsonists. Owners have to take precautions and not allow their property to fall into an “abandon state” as these are more likely to be taken over by thugs and homeless people and eventually become a prey for arsonists.
