Motorists warned after work site safety breach on Bishopgate Street

The Antigua Public Utilities Authority has warned motorists to obey traffic controls after a driver entered a restricted work zone on Bishopgate Street, where mainline replacement works are under way.

APUA said the incident happened on Saturday when a motorist removed traffic cones and drove through the active site, damaging materials laid out for the project. The authority confirmed that the works have now reached the stage of customer reconnections.

In a statement issued on Monday, APUA said the action posed serious risks to public safety and to workers on site, and could delay completion of the project. It stressed that barriers, cones and signage are in place to protect lives and critical infrastructure.

The authority urged all road users to follow work zone signs, comply with traffic instructions and avoid restricted areas while construction continues.

APUA thanked the public for their cooperation and said further information is available from its Support Centre on 211.
