Antigua Public Utilities Authority (APUA) and Seven Seas Water Group (SSWG) have partnered to increase water production by 3 million gallons per day.

SSWG will build two new seawater reverse osmosis plants near Fryes Beach and Barnacle Point.

The $80 million project includes a $23 million (EC$62.1 million) investment from SSWG and an additional EC$15 million from APUA. John Bradshaw, APUA’s General Manager, highlighted the need for public/private partnerships for funding.

The goal is to have both plants operational within 18 months, with Fryes Beach starting production in six to seven months.

Despite technological advancements, consumer water prices have remained unchanged since the 1990s.

Minister Melford Nicholas hinted at an upcoming price increase, starting with business customers and extending to domestic consumers, due to financial challenges faced by the water division, historically subsidized by other APUA units.

  1. The issue Antigua is having isn’t a capacity issue if the 12 million gallons per day that Cabinet indicated we are now producing is to be believed. Many communities are still only receiving water twice per week and for a few hours making it extremely difficult to do the basics that require a steady supply of water such as washing, cleaning, showering. Antiguans are now stockpiling water in buckets and bottles as though we are in the 1960s and standpipes are still the main source of running water.

  2. “Despite technological advancements, consumer water prices have remained unchanged since the 1990s.”

Such BS!! Consumer prices have remained unchanged because consumers don’t get water. Period. Not because APUA is being generous

  3. this is not good news for the people who own water trucks 🤐 plenty a them in government too.
