Prime Minister Gaston Browne is willing to discuss outstanding payments to former LIAT 1974 Ltd employees but rejects the union’s demand for 100% severance pay.

The government offers a 32% compassionate payment, urging the union to engage in Monday’s negotiations, as this offer is not indefinite. Browne emphasizes that the ABWU must accept this offer, indicating that the matter is in their hands.

Browne also announces progress on LIAT 2020, a new airline to enhance Caribbean air travel.

Shareholder governments approved the sale of three leased aircraft for US$12.1 million, with US$4.1 million already in escrow and financing secured for the rest.

Air Peace, a Nigerian airline, will contribute US$60 million and become the largest shareholder, operating the new airline.

Browne defends Air Peace’s capabilities and highlights its recent route to JFK Airport in New York, confirming its status as Africa’s largest airline.

He reaffirms the government’s decision to close LIAT (1974) Ltd during the COVID-19 pandemic as an opportunity to “right-size LIAT.”

  1. And … Whatabout passengers who have unusable tickets on the now defunct Liat?
Never received an initial refund when Liat shrank to one plane, now have another ticket and in same position again…
Surely taking people’s money for an advertised service, then closing the business must ensure travelers who bought tickets in good conscience must be repaid fully?

I’m twice-bitten now and will be extremely wary of any future PeaceLiat ting. Tief yer money with no ethics or conscience.

    • Sad to say but a high percentage of those workers voted for Browne boy in the last election so your getting what you deserve sitting back and watching what’s going on in Antigua makes me believe it could only happen there,I’m one of those people get left with a ticket in 2020 for $432.00 us dollars but I can tell you this I would never be flying with liat ever again.

  2. A quick search will reveal your PM lying blatantly again to the citizens. Keep voting the Creative Self Enricher in. You already see where this country is going. Gas tax raised, water rates raised and the latest is tax payers have to pay for the missing $21K.

The infrastructure here is in dire need of major updates and it seems that all the Gasston ass kissers are ok with it so long as they are getting their stuff in duty free.

Soon from now your descendants won’t be able to own any land as the PM is giving it away in lieu of paying back all the loans his not worth a penny body can’t afford.

  3. @More lies from the PM

Why is The Media, The Unions and The Opposition allowing Gaston Browne to control the narrative about LIAT with inconsistencies and lies.

First: The Receiver and the Liquidator with the approval of the Court are the entities in the driver’s seat with regards to LIAT (1974. It is true the LIAT (2020) is a separate corporate for which the Receiver and the judge has no jurisdiction.
But they the Receiver and the Judge makes all final decision with regards to LIAT (1974) Should that not be the case; the Unions and other creditors can go into another civil court and have the Receiver and the bankruptcy judge provide answers to what is really going on.

Second: The Shareholder governments are debtors in possession and all creditors (primarily THE UNIONS) has to be satisfied before the debtor(s) in possession can get their hands on the remaining assets.

Thirdly: Gaston has coined the phrase “Compassionate payments”. What it is “The Ripp-off Offers” Take note Gaston never puts out a missive on the union members compensation without using his BS phase “Compassionate Payments”

Fouth: Just weeks ago Gaston puts out a missive: Antigua and Barbuda is getting in debt to the tune of $60 million and supplying two used aircraft, and Air Peace is supplying two used aircraft to get LIAT (2020) up and flying.

Fifth: Interestingly, after the giveaway deal to Air Peace has not been questioned on the comment pages; all of a sudden, it’s another deal.

Sixth: Gaston and his PR team are well aware that their lies and inconsistences are not challenged even by those who are directly affected. He keeps putting them out.

Sixth: At this time, given the inconsistences regarding the Air peace deal. Given these deals are already signed It’s time for the public to see the records. Remember the China (bogus) MOU deals were published. Why not the Air Peace deal?

Seventh: Just like Yada is gone a Guasa; soon will be LIAT(2020)
