LaNica Locker, a 17-year-old student at Ottos Comprehensive School (OCS), has etched her name in Antigua and Barbuda’s track and field history by becoming the nation’s first female athlete to secure a medal at the Commonwealth Youth Games.

Locker claimed the bronze medal in the 200 Meters Girls’ Under-18 Final with a time of 23.56 seconds, at the event held in Trinidad.

Faith Okwuosa (23.36) and Justina Tia Eyakpobeyan (23.47) from Nigeria secured the first and second positions.

Locker’s accomplishment follows in the footsteps of previous medalists from Antigua and Barbuda, including Tahir Walsh and Sheldon Noble.

  1. Congratulation Lanika. It’s great just being in a finals of one a these track and field competition, but to actually medal shows your hard work paid off. By the way where are we on the World athletics championship coming up in a week’s time? The last I saw CJae was at Yasco where he did what was expected, but I haven’t really seen him running against any of the big names and this is where you know what you need to work on, especially time. I’ve watched every Diamond league thus far for 2023 and not once have I seen Cj. Ministry of sport needs to do better, even the little BVI and USVI pushing way ahead of us. Do you guys realize Bakka was ranked as the third fastest in the world at one time, with a relay team capable of doing damage at anytime? Am tired of settling for anything Caribbean, if not a medal at least get us in the finals.

  2. Congratulations to you LaNica. You have made your country proud. i wish you a bright and successful athletic future.
It is strange that we have so many Antiguan females making us proud lately. I’ll await the installation of our first Female Prime Minister.
