Antigua’s Cabinet Considers Request To Rename Mount Obama back to Boggy Peak
The Antigua Cabinet is considering a proposal to officially rename Mount Obama back to its original name, Boggy Peak.
The 1,319-foot mountain, located in the Shekerley Mountains, has continued to be referred to as Boggy Peak by many locals, despite being renamed in 2009 in honor of former U.S. President Barack Obama.
“A request has been entered to rename Mount Obama to Boggy Peak; since its 2008 renaming, all continue to refer to the 1,019-foot mountain as “Boggy Peak”.“
The renaming to Mount Obama was announced by then-Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer following Obama’s historic election as the first Black president of the United States.
The ceremony, held on August 4, 2009, coincided with Obama’s 48th birthday and was intended to celebrate his achievement as a source of inspiration for people of African descent. However, since then, the name has struggled to gain traction among residents, who have largely retained the original moniker.
Boggy Peak, Antigua’s highest point, holds deep cultural and historical significance. During the era of slavery, the surrounding mountains were home to sugarcane plantations and served as a refuge for runaway slaves who established settlements in the rugged terrain. The name “Boggy Peak” is tied to folklore, with stories of the “Boogie Man” used to discourage enslaved individuals from fleeing into the mountains.
Despite the symbolic gesture of renaming the mountain to honor Obama, many Antiguans feel that the original name better reflects the island’s heritage and history. This sentiment is at the heart of the recent proposal, which acknowledges the enduring cultural attachment to Boggy Peak.

The UPP decision was misguided in my view when you look at US Foreign Policy towards the Caribbean and Latin America. Nothing significant has happened to improve the lives of our peoples prior to and during the Obama Administration; and it surely won’t happen under the Trump Administration with a Marco Rubio as Secretary of State. I for one, never referred to it as Mount Obama.It was always and still is Boggy Peak. There are so many note worthy persons in Antigua worthy of their names on that Mountain. So why Obama?
