Antigua’s Airport to Undergo US$47 Million Runway Upgrade as Push for OECS Category 1 Status Intensifies
St John’s, Antigua and Barbuda — Antigua and Barbuda is preparing to begin a major US$47 million runway resurfacing project at the V.C. Bird International Airport in July, as the country ramps up efforts to achieve Category 1 aviation status through the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS).
Tourism and Civil Aviation Minister Charles ‘Max’ Fernandez confirmed that the resurfacing works are expected to take between 10 and 12 months and will be carried out during night hours to avoid disruption to daily air traffic.
“Work will begin after the last flight lands and conclude before the first flight takes off in the morning,” Fernandez explained. “We’ve done this type of project before, but this time we’re ensuring everything is done properly and to scale.”
The upgrade is part of a broader initiative to bring Antigua and its regional partners up to the standards required for FAA Category 1 designation — a key step toward expanding direct international air service.
Fernandez noted that while Antigua is ready in many respects, the push for Category 1 is a collective OECS effort that requires harmonised legislation and technical readiness across all member states.
The Eastern Caribbean Civil Aviation Authority (ECCAA) is leading the coordination to meet the stringent U.S. Federal Aviation Administration requirements.
In addition to runway improvements, the government continues to support advancements in passenger processing technologies at the airport, including the launch of Arrive Antigua and the introduction of electronic gates and self-service kiosks.
The investments are intended to improve safety, enhance the visitor experience, and support Antigua and Barbuda’s growing role as a regional air travel hub.
