Antiguan Students in Cuba Seek Urgent Guidance as Tensions Escalate

15

Antiguan students studying in Havana are urging Prime Minister Gaston Browne and Antigua and Barbuda’s ambassador to Cuba, George Goodwin, to intervene urgently, saying they have received no official guidance as tensions escalate in Cuba.

The students say other Caribbean embassies have begun briefing their nationals, but Antigua and Barbuda’s mission has not communicated with them, leaving them uncertain about safety arrangements or possible evacuation. Some say they are reluctant to speak publicly, fearing repercussions.

Their concerns follow new measures by the United States, where President Donald J. Trump signed an executive order declaring a national emergency over alleged threats from the Cuban government, triggering fresh sanctions effective Jan. 30. As foreign governments and companies review contingency plans, the students say they need clear direction from home authorities to ensure their safety.

  1. Did your government think that the Cubans were gonna sit idly by and let your government dump American garbage on them and do nothing, when they’ve been so generous and supportive of your government healthcare and education systems?
Life don’t work like that. Tell your government to transfer you all to Ghana in exchange for the Ghanaians taking the Cubans place in healthcare or better yet let the Chinese government take you all in.
    Comprende?

  2. My clear guidance is to leave Cuba, and go to Canada or UK or USA for a better education and safety. You may also learn it is better to strive for democracy than authoritarian or dictatorship. It is time to leave, go back home urgently.

  3. One thing about our Prime Minister, he does not with haste. He is very watchful and very tactful. I am sure he is not overlooking the situation and at the same time putting things in place to act accordingly when he sees it fit to do so…

However, I must say that rightfully so, the contingent in Cuba should be kept abreast as to what is in the pipe line as the contingency plan

  4. No compassion at all instead of wishing the student a safe return home. The constant bashing from Antiguans, you all complain about the Garnian nurses not given them a chance. What you all don’t know is that they have compassion, when you are sick in the hospital all you need is a hand to hold.and people with compassion I will leave it right there.

  5. Anyone who been to Cuba including all the students who have studied there over the years knows the hardships and sacrifices that they have endured. The situation in Cuba is now even more compounded and complicated. Venezuela supplied Cuba with 90 percent of its oil and Mexico about 10 percent. With the US take over of Venezuela, their supply is done and with US exerting pressure on Mexico, it is just a matter of time before Cuba is plunged into permanent darkness. While our students are safe for now, the situation is something to be carefully watched and monitored. Cuba is likely to undergo its greatest pressure since its revolution as the US is adamant to see regime change there much like what they did in Venezuela.

  6. @My way of helping are you going to pick up the tab for transferring these students to Canada and the UK? Did you know education in Cuba is free all the way to a PhD, MD etc.? We are talking millions of dollars here boy, so get that in your head first before you spew your bile.

  7. @Watching, what is your evidence that our Prime Minister as you say “…he is not overlooking the situation [in Cuba] … and […] putting things in place to act accordingly…”

How can you say this without any creditable evidence from the government?

Let Gaston Browne clarify the potential seriousness of the situation with our students living and studying in Cuba for himself; and stop giving him a free pass.

It shouldn’t be left up to the students to show concern for their welfare and wellbeing, but again, our government should have been proactive and prioritised their safety when Trump was threatening to invade a couple of months ago.

    The reactive ABLP strikes again!

    Absolutely shocking!!!

Hoping and praying that our Antiguan students get the assurances they need for an immediate and safe evacuation.🙏🏾

  8. @ My Way Of Helping
America is now a Dictatorship with the Republicans and Donald Trump or aren’t you aware

  9. When I read lines like this I get so annoyed: “Some say they are reluctant to speak publicly, fearing repercussions.”

What repercussions are you fearing when you have concerns about your safety? Why are you waiting? If you or your parents have concerns, time to fly out and go where it’s safe.

Where are the parents? I am sure that your child has expressed their concerns to you. Scholarship or not….if my child is not feeling safe, best believe I am sending for my child.

  10. I could pick up some of the tabs if they are studying in the US. I think my Antiguan and Barbudan people deserves the highest level of education. The highest level of education is in the US, Canada and UK. I will not apologize for believing in my people while you think they deserve some of the lowest levels of education.

Everyone, run out of Cuba now. Leave. Do not listen to folks who care nothing for you but to simply say they did this or that for you without considering the quality.

Students are living in misery I was told when they study in Cuba.

  11. I don’t know if we are aware that St. Lucia has ended their students Medical Studies in Cuba as of January 2026: Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre announced that Saint Lucian students can no longer study medicine in Cuba. This decision according to him was driven by U.S. geopolitical pressures, marking a significant change in how the country handles medical training, with the government now looking toward local initiatives and the diaspora to fill the gap.
I guess we might be hearing same story from other regional governments soon.

  12. @MWOH TAKE A DOSE OF HUSH SOMETIMES:
We don’t send for “Free” students to Cuba..Cuba is one of the most manipulative government in the world, the Narrative of “Free” can catch plenty people with the pants down and believe that something is real “Free”. Is like elections, Cuba is buying loyalty and followers to support them in the International Diplomacy field.
If we want to be part of 1st world countries, my dear friend, we need to get an education from 1st worlds countries then. Do you think Canada, Australia, European become wealthy because they send students for Free to Cuba? Or because their government invest in humans resources a lot and make them be prepared to make their countries wealthy. Don’t be naive. The education system in Cuba is totally outdated and is just adoctrination. If to want to become a Joiner Carpenter you need to be in a Joiner’s Carpenter shop, not with a Formwork Carpenter.
Antigua is wasting a lot of dollars in nonsense, that’s why we don’t have enough funds to send people to study in the best Universities to make our Country better. Without well prepare humans resources, we aren’t going anywhere.

  13. @Smith I hope your first name is not Anthony but if it is this will suit you both just fine, “UNGRATEFULNESS WUS DAN WITCHCRAFT!”

The Cuban medical brigade almost single handed saved you ungrateful putas from almost been decimated by the Corona Virus which they designed in a lab to cripple your ungrateful asses. Where the fuck were the Americans to help? They were sitting back allowing Faucci and his lies to fuck you all royally.
