Antiguan MPs Call on Youth to Lead and Build a Better Nation

Two Members of Parliament have urged Antigua and Barbuda’s young people to embrace leadership, innovation, and resilience as they mark International Youth Day.

MP Maria Browne

MP Maria Browne encouraged youth to “keep your heads up, work hard, and believe in your dreams,” reminding them that even in challenging times they have “the strength to overcome and the power to achieve great things.” She said this year’s theme — Local Youth Action for the SDGs and Beyond — underlines how their energy and creativity can help achieve the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, protect the environment, and strengthen communities.

MP Anthony Smith Jr. also paid tribute to the “energy, creativity, and determination” of the nation’s young people, calling them “a vital part of the present” as well as the future. He said true progress comes when generations work together, with elders serving as “trusted advisors” while making space for young people to “lead, innovate, and shape the direction of our nation.”

“To every young person: your time is now,” Smith said. “Your ideas, your voice, and your leadership are needed today; not someday.”

  1. I wish there was a way to hide the youths from you. I can imagine what they would grasp because the younger folks are generally easily influenced. He has perfected the art of treachery. There should be a rigorous campaign in All Saints West to condemn him for the traitor that he is.

  2. Although I agree with many of these sentiments, I think most youths should be preparing/training to lead not leading just yet in a major way. I think middle aged persons make some of the best leaders with older persons advising with their acquired wisdom and younger persons assisting with their great energy and enthusiasm. Young adults have just begun adulting so whereas they should be afforded full freedom to sort out their own personal lives, they are not really experienced enough in life to make major decisions for lots of other people. They are also more easily influenced by new ideas which might be still be insufficiently proven or might just be recycled old ideas. They also lack knowledge of successful traditional systems of the past. The most successful countries use a combination of traditional methods and novel technology not just the latest tech. Knowing when and where technology would be helpful and not helpful is important. Young people believing that they should lead everyone right away fosters unnecessary conflict between generations and increases disrespect towards elders which can lead to poor decision making. Also, older generations expecting young people to come up with all the ideas and fix all the problems actually stagnates development because the older ones are actually the ones with the resources and experience to make meaningful changes. But, young people should definitely be practicing their leadership skills from time to time.

  3. Boss, you have lost the moral and ethical capital to genuinely make this call. You should have thought of this before accepting the Judas award.

  4. Well said Anthony- Harold keeping you busy on your toes. Sure All Saints will now get the attention that it deserves. The infrastructure- Road, water and Street lights The poly Clinic which could well operate as a mini hospital, servicing such as wide area has been closed for a few years. Harold said in his post, the length of time that Clinic has been closed shows you are sleeping in the job. Yes you man say if is now she is showing interest, however you are the paid representative and this should not stay unopened this long . This is one of the areas that you have let down the people of All Saints West in a big way.

  5. I just can’t take in the words of Smith of seriously, if a person political ideology said to he completely opposite to the party you run and then you join them. There is 0 reason for me to take you as a serious person how can I believe in the words you say when you don’t believe believe in what you stand for.

  6. Now he remembers All Saints pple!!! Now?!!! Steups.
