Antigua and Barbuda’s sole Chevening recipient for 2025, Dr David Francis, has been awarded a scholarship to pursue a Master’s in Applied Infectious Disease Epidemiology at University College London.
Francis, a House Officer in the Subspecialties Department at Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre, specialises in nephrology, neurology and oncology. He also chairs the hospital’s dialysis unit Infectious Disease Committee, focusing on infection prevention for high-risk patients.
“I now have the ability to study epidemiology, a field that examines disease patterns and health determinants, and apply it to improve outcomes in Antigua and Barbuda,” Francis said. His research will focus on outbreak management and strategies to mitigate infectious diseases.
The Chevening Scholarship, funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, provides full funding for one-year master’s degrees at leading UK universities. Recipients are selected for their leadership potential and commitment to driving positive change in their home countries.

Resident British Ambassador John Hamilton praised Francis’s achievement, highlighting the competitiveness of the programme. “David has excelled not only locally but across the Eastern Caribbean. We are confident he will become a leading doctor in the country,” he said.
Applications for the 2026 Chevening cohort are now open until November. Candidates can apply online at chevening.org.
