OECS Authority chairman, Prime Minister Gaston Browne says Antigua and Barbuda could soon be sending residents to Canada for temporary employment.
Browne told the closing of the OECS Heads of government meeting here on Tuesday that while Antigua has not traditionally been part of the programme it has now “signalled its intention to joining the initiative.”
“Practically all of the OECS states are participating with the exception of Antigua and Barbuda,” he told reporters.
Browne said, “we believe that participation will not only help in terms of earning but there would be a transfer of technology especially within the agricultural sector.”
He is also hoping that “it will give us a larger cadre of agricultural entrepreneurs in order to develop our domestic industry in Antigua and certainly within the wider OECS subregion.”
The Eastern Caribbean Liaison Service continues to provide easier access to available jobs in the Canadian agricultural and other industries through the Canada-Caribbean Seasonal Agricultural Workers Program (SAWP) for decades now.

Antiguans have been participants in this program for decades now, have a friend that used to go every year.
I don’t see how picking apples on a farm will transfer technology but what do I know.

LMAO! Perfect response Mr. Pompey.
When a person harbours bitterness, negativity and unforgiving spirit, it shows.

@ Pompey. The article in StLuciaOnline is irrelevant to what I posted. So what if they need biometrics now.
The fact is Antiguans have been on this program for decades. I remember an entire basketball team used to go back in the 80s.
MISSED THE BOAT
H…m, not sure what ‘Dessalines’ needs, but obviously, he may have completely ‘…Missed the Boat.’
Rawlston Pompey would not accept any responsibility for any ‘…lack of comprehension.’
Dangerous thing to travel in a tunnel. Can only see what is immediately in front and not what may lie ahead.
My friend Dessalines, ‘…Did you not see the headline that speaks to ‘…Restrictions on Farm Workers’ with the requirement of ‘…Biometric Data.’
Did you not also read that those in Canada are now required to travel back to Trinidad and Tobago to have this done.
It was showing how difficult it is going to be for potential farm labourers to be imported from the region.
It is saying that it is not going to be that easy to gain entry, neither to the programme, nor to mainland Canada.
The PM was only looking at the possibility to be part of the programme as been the participation of its regional neighbors.
He may very well scrap the idea if nationals are going to be placed in helpless or miserable situations.
When Canadian authorities recently introduced ‘…Visa Requirement’ to enter its borders, did you not see that also as a ‘…Restriction on travelers to Canada?
You miscomprehended my comment. My point was twofold
1. This is not new or news to Antigua.
2. Picking apples does not in itself transfer agricultural technology to the participants.
The difficulties encountered in traveling to Canada is irrelevant to my points listed and a separate and distinct issue.
Anyone has ever thought about developing the agricultural system in the Caribbean and employ these farm workers and sell the produce to Canada?
What is the OECS plan? For economic sustainability?
All this us saying we have persons who are willing and ready to work on a farm for a fair pay and decent working conditions.
