Antigua’s Government Unveils Strategy to Address Nursing Shortage Amidst Global Challenges
In response to the pressing nursing shortage in Antigua and Barbuda, Information Minister Melford Nicholas has outlined a comprehensive strategy to bolster the country’s healthcare workforce.
The minister’s announcement comes as the nation grapples with the dual challenges of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and a global shortage of healthcare professionals.
“The shortage of nurses in our healthcare system is a critical issue that requires immediate attention,” Minister Nicholas emphasized.
“To address this challenge, the government is implementing a multifaceted approach aimed at recruiting more nurses, improving working conditions, and enhancing training opportunities.”
Central to the government’s strategy is an aggressive recruitment drive, both locally and internationally, to attract qualified nurses to work in Antigua’s healthcare facilities.
The government also plans to enhance the capacity of local nursing schools to produce more graduates, thereby increasing the pool of qualified professionals.
Additionally, the government is committed to improving working conditions for nurses by providing better pay, benefits, and career advancement opportunities.
This includes investing in continuing education and professional development programs to ensure that nurses have the skills and knowledge needed to provide high-quality care.
“We recognize the invaluable contribution that nurses make to our healthcare system, especially in these challenging times,” Minister Nicholas stated. “By investing in our nursing workforce and creating a supportive work environment, we aim to ensure that all Antiguans and Barbudans have access to the quality healthcare they deserve.”

We need to stop importing all these people. The country is full. The infrastructure and resources on this small island can’t support 100K people.

All of this is a result of ignoring the plight and cries of our people for too long. So, they head for green pastures and rather than address that problem, we create another problem by importing, “Tom, Dick and Harry”. It would surprise you to know how many foreign lecturers work at UWI Five Islands that we have to pay, while Antiguans can’t get a job there!
Every time I listen to some program from Courts, Insurances, supermarkets etc, it all foreign accents I hear.
Why are we importing all these people? And, we have no water to satisfy the increase and practically no hospital for them to go if sick! Plus no schools to accommodate their children and no work for their spouses. I wonder when the majority of Antiguans will wake up and face their reality.
I’m sure if the Antigua people are qualified they would be employed. Can’t use that as an excuse
High praise to the late Tim Hector and ACLM….education was a paramount vision of the ACLM…the opening of doors to universities in Cuba …while he was suppressed by mainstream political parties….while we were rejecting Cuban scholarships at the time ….Grenada 🇬🇩…St. Lucia 🇱🇨…Dominica 🇩🇲 even Guyana were all being trained and educated in Cuba. Now we are struggling to certify our tradesmen. Why do you think we have fallen behind…
