Antigua and Barbuda will host the fifth annual Fortis Advocatus Moot Court Competition this week, bringing together top CAPE-level law students from across the Eastern Caribbean.

Participants from Antigua and Barbuda, Grenada and St Vincent will engage in mock trial proceedings at the High Court in St John’s. The competition aims to familiarise students with the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court and develop their legal advocacy skills.

Qualifying rounds began last year, with teams submitting written arguments, or memorials. The best-performing Antiguan teams advanced to this week’s semifinals, set for Thursday at 09:00.

Students will argue a fictional criminal appeal case, taking on the roles of either appellant or respondent. A panel of judges—including High Court justices, senior counsel and the acting Director of Public Prosecutions—will assess both legal reasoning and oral presentation.

The top teams will compete in Friday’s final, with winners awarded internships and cash prizes.

The competition is organised by a committee of legal professionals, including attorneys Athill, Kemar Roberts, Jeniece St Romain and Curtis Cornelius.

The public is invited to attend, subject to courtroom capacity.
