Despite the pleas and efforts over the years to curtail illegal dumping, for Antigua & Barbuda, the problem doesn’t seem to be going away.
After our cameras stumbled over piles of garbage at several illegal dumping sites behind the Royals Estate, the imagines are likely to frustrate those working to keep the country clean.
This largely unused dirt road, linking Royals to New Winthropes appears to be the dumping ground of choice for several individuals.
The litter bugs are disposing of old furniture, cookware, plastic items, old clothing and dead animals there.
The age-old problem has existed for years and in the past litter wardens have been appointed to catch individuals in the act.
Harsher penalties in the new Environment Act hasn’t helped.
The government has also embarked on a nation-wide cleanup campaign but the problem appears to be an uphill task.
