Antigua Spay & Neuter Clinic Says 71 Dogs Spayed as Push for Responsible Pet Ownership Gains Pace

The Antigua Spay & Neuter Clinic says it has spayed 71 dogs since January, marking early progress in what it declared at the start of the year would be a renewed drive for responsible pet ownership across the island.

The clinic announced in January that it wanted to make 2026 “the year of responsible pet owners,” urging residents to take simple but consistent steps to safeguard their animals’ health and reduce the number of unwanted litters.

Among the measures highlighted were early vaccinations to prevent diseases such as parvovirus and leptospirosis, regular deworming, and routine flea and tick treatments. The group also stressed that spaying and neutering remain critical to preventing unwanted puppies and kittens, as well as the stress associated with heat cycles and roaming packs of dogs.

In its latest update, the clinic said it is “determined to make dogs a priority this year to reduce pups struggling to find homes.” It thanked a sponsor for covering the cost of surgeries for animals from the Dogs and Cats of Antigua Sanctuary and credited Simone Donelan for assisting with coordinating animals for procedures.

Community dogs that are sterilized will be tattooed for identification, while owners of pets must sign consent forms before surgeries are performed, the clinic said.

The organization also reminded pet owners that water, shelter and food are essential, and that while chaining dogs is discouraged, animals must be kept on their owners’ property and not allowed to roam freely.

Animal welfare advocates have long argued that expanding access to preventative care and sterilization services is one of the most effective ways to reduce stray populations and ease the burden on shelters.

The clinic encouraged residents to reflect on their responsibilities as pet owners and to take proactive steps to ensure the health and safety of their animals in 2026.
