Sir Gerald Watt KC has been re-elected as Speaker of the House of Representatives.
He emerged the winner following a ballot, after Opposition Leader Jamale Pringle had nominated Sherrie Ann Bradshaw and Asot Michael had nominated former Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer for the post.
Sir Gerald received 9 votes to Bradshaw’s 8.
Neither Asot Michael who nominated Spencer, nor Trevor Walker who seconded the nomination, voted for him.
During the proceedings, supporters in the gallery were in full voice with cheers, and sometimes jeers.

@ Beef: Congratulations is more than in order. Mr Watt tries to be fair as much as possible. From what was displayed on television during election watch, Ms Bradshaw certainly would not be an ideal choice to be the speaker of the house. It is my view that her biasness, her disrespect & dislike of certain individuals of the ABLP would be very blatant during her seating
Too much drama and out of all that, the right man came out on top. Can anyone really trust Asot? Here is a man that sat on the opposition bench in this same house and chastised Mr Baldwin Spencer as leader of the country and just to be heard and seen, got up and gave the life history of Mr Spencer then turnaround and didn’t even give the man his vote, now that’s political drama to the fullest.

Well, maybe you are not the worse. Max who claims to be so offay with politics did not see it too. He thought it was so bad for Asot to nominate Spencer and not vote for him.

That Lady,Lawyer,Sherrie Ann Bradshaw. I have had the pleasure of dealing with her from thousands of miles away. She is an HONEST LAWYER. She collected a sum for me on a deal and deposited every cent into my account in Antigua. Unlike that Lawyer who collected $$$ for his client and had to be taken to Court by the woman from Switzerland to get her money.There are still some honest Lawyers left in Antigua among those dishonest ones.
Carvaa the opposition forces were brilliant in parliament on Friday. They pulled off a great stunt. Nominated three candidates, which by constitution led to provide voting. Then they joined forces and all voted for the same person. ABLP was lucky that All their parliamentarians stuck together others it could have easily gone against Sir Gerald Watts.
Now politicians as leaders of this country you will need to show better examples to this country young people. The behavior was tug like and that included the PM mostly.
The Clerk of parliament was right in giving 10 invitations per representative. It would have been a mess if anyone and everyone were allowed as in the past. I do agree it nice great that the nation is showing such great interest in our parliament. Our elected representative feet will now be held to the fire and the debates will mean will be interesting. The government is walking a tight rope and the PM cannot disrespect any of his ministers otherwise he could be out of office. He is ruling with the slimmest of margins and one serious sickness or death which is inevitable ( to us humans ) and he will have to call a snap election. This is how vulnerable this situation is, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye Antigua government can change.
Today the Africans were demonstrating outside the St.John police station. That is one issue that is not going anywhere and can lead to the destruction of the sitting government. These people do not want to stay in Antigua. Many of them are becoming destitute and desperate and that can lead to anything. I hope that the government faces up to their mess and do something about this before the situation get worst.
By the way Trevor Walker was the parliamentarian of the day. He will have many more great days in this term.

FS, that’s why I ask the question if anyone can really trust Asot? Then you have Mr Pringle reading from a paper as if to say his acquaintance betwixt he and Ms Bradshaw wasn’t updated. FS, this will be the norm in Parliament going forth from the opposition, hoping one of the nine might see it their way.
You know Friday the whole day I was looking to read the story in this online media, who usually is the first out the block with ‘hot stories’. However, I believe they had to meet and discuss how best to draft this article, without exposing the obvious that happened. Which was a dishonorable act by people whom we now must refer to as honorable men and women. And that was an act perpetrated by none other than the two most deceitful members of Parliament. The member from Barbuda and the member from St. Peter’s. If this is not a prelim of what is to come and to expect from especially both these two men, then I don’t know what is. Thank God we have been spared that they could have been the government. And since I don’t know whether or not the former Prime Minister was part of the plot of this dishonorable act, I would excuse him and simply put that he must have been used. Nevertheless, he never came to the public and voiced his displeasure with the manner in which his name and status was being damaged. This leaves lots of questions in the mind of many, whether he was also part of the plot. Our journalists/ reporters should have asked those questions to him on our behalf in order to leave all suspicions behind. But ‘No’, not our reporters. They have their own agenda. So, the first act in our Parliament from His Majesty’s Royal Opposition was a “DISHONORSABLE ACT”. I wonder how many more dishonorable acts they would show us. Anyway, this one is good now for our history books of Parliament. Nominating someone and then turnaround and not even voting for the person you nominate. What a thing. Can we sink any lower than that? The Speaker will have a lot on his hands, in order to keep the parliamentary debate to an acceptable standard. I wait to see who will be the first parliamentarian to be sent out of parliament for disorderly conduct. We know the member for St. Peter has that reputation already.
@Sidelines: Both Members of Parliament Exercised their Constitutional Parliamentary Rights. Perhaps Gaston should have hand picked you to be the Speaker of the House.
What does that have to do when one’s deceitfulness is exposed for all to see? Is being deceitful part of your constitutional right?
If so, I don’t see why we then need to refer such men and women as ‘honorable’. At least if you nominate someone, you are expected to vote for the person you nominated. Or else what is the purpose of you nominating that person?
