Antigua Senator Tells Youth ‘The Time is Now’ at Church Camporee

Gilberts Estate, Antigua and Barbuda – Senator Michael Freeland has called on young people to embrace leadership and become “agents of positive change”, delivering remarks at the opening of the South Leeward Conference Junior Youth Camporee 2025.

Speaking on behalf of Prime Minister Gaston Browne, the senator addressed campers and church leaders gathered at Gilberts Estate for the week-long event organised by the Seventh-day Adventist Church. This year’s theme, “NOW!”, was described as a timely call to action.

“Now is the time to choose purpose over popularity, character over chaos, and faith over fear,” Mr Freeland told attendees. “Now is the time to be the change.”

Mr Browne, currently overseas, was unable to attend the event but conveyed his support through the senator, who praised the Church’s investment in youth development across the region.

Programmes such as Pathfinders, Adventurers and Eager Beavers, Mr Freeland said, had produced capable leaders in fields ranging from medicine and education to government and tourism. He credited the Church with fostering discipline, spirituality, and civic responsibility among young people.

“At a time when some are quick to write off our youth, this Camporee declares that they are not the problem – they are the promise,” he said.

Addressing the audience, the senator challenged campers to embrace curiosity, respect, and joy, while calling on parents to remain active and prayerful influences in their children’s lives. He urged the Church to continue its “sacred work” of mentoring the next generation.

The Camporee, which runs from 16 to 21 April, combines faith-based activities with outdoor learning and leadership training. Organisers hope the event will inspire a new wave of youth leadership grounded in Christian values and community service.

  1. Why was prime minister Browne slated to speak?
Is he the minister responsible for youth in Antigua?
    Oopppp!!! I am sorry.
I forgot that we do not have one.
Do churches just call on anyone to adress their functions?
The churches need to realise that they have a purpose.
Their purpose is not to be in bed with politicians but to work with them.
That being said the pulpit is not for political commentary.
How can you have a politician preaching vulgarity all week and on Sunday have him on your pulpit?????
You are bringing dishonor to the pulpit.
Ok. The prime miniser was unsbale where was the minister of ecclestical affairs?
Is the church complicit in allowing the pulpit to be used to promote politicians?
    Sad state of affairs!!!!!!

  2. Nothing wrong with the message. Wrong messenger and then you people castigate the UPP. Sungu and Lungu same dutty khaki pants

  3. Guys, stop politicize everything. It’s sad that everything has to turn into politics in this country. The message was a great message. Let’s celebrate what the church is doing for our young people. We argue about the crime that young people are committing. Yet, when we have positive engagements for our young people and they are engaged in good things, we still complain. The church did excellent — 1300 young people from 7 different countries praising God. The government assisted. And that’s a positive thing.

  4. THE TIME IS NOW, No one is critizing the message the messenger just happened to be the wrong one, if it was someone from the other side the Lickspittle Brigade would be using it as political fodder, in Antigua lub so no hab so, you all are just a bunch of hypocrites, I’m almost certain we’ll be hearing from Faithful National # 1

  5. This is why I know the church or straight up the business place where the poor wealth is extorted from them throughout their lifetime is corrupt, Carson Greene worked at swiss bank with Gaston brown, he still keep that close friendship from the days working withe Russian mafia’s laundering monies, Carson Greene knew ostensibly about the payments to Lester, robin and Ron saunders and asot, the head of the south leeward mission has given mr freeland the church platform to get elected into winning the lottery, that’s the tax payers treasury. Kiwi g fully well that freeland embezzled the port monies and had to pay it back, Carson Greene you must walk a new road, one time you had to do dirty work in swiss bank but now is not the time again to use the Adventist organisation to do it for Gaston your former coworker and friend.
