Antigua Secures $800K Grant to Boost Agricultural Productivity
The Ministry of Agriculture in Antigua and Barbuda has secured an $800,000 grant from the Caribbean Development Fund (CDF) to purchase equipment and enhance farming operations across the country.
Agriculture Minister Anthony Smith confirmed the funding during a recent interview, explaining that it will help tackle key challenges faced by farmers, including land clearing and access to modern tools.
“We secured a grant from the Caribbean Development Fund of about $800,000,” Smith said. “We’re going to use this towards getting more equipment for the ministry so we can help with the clearing down of lands.”
The grant is part of the government’s wider plan to modernize agriculture and strengthen its contribution to the economy. Minister Smith highlighted the sector’s recent progress, noting its growing importance.
“Agriculture contributed $116 million to the economy this year,” he said. “This grant is another step forward in supporting our farmers and ensuring continued growth.”
The funding will address longstanding issues such as access to cleared land, reliable equipment, and improved infrastructure.
The Ministry of Agriculture has also committed to projects that include rehabilitating feeder roads, constructing dams, and upgrading agricultural stations to increase productivity.
The initiatives form part of the government’s drive to boost food security and reduce reliance on food imports, while supporting farmers in scaling up operations.
The ministry will oversee the rollout of the equipment, with farmers encouraged to engage directly with officials to access support.
