The Government of Antigua and Barbuda has denied a request from Virgin Atlantic for a minimum revenue guarantee, which Chief of Staff Lionel ‘Max’ Hurst said was excessive.
Minimum revenue guarantees include the government assuming a portion of the traffic risk to guarantee a minimum level of revenue and profitability to the airline.
“We had been approached by Virgin Atlantic but theirs was just so outrageous that we could not agree to it,” Hurst said on Observer Radio on Monday.
“I think they were making the same demands of other Caribbean countries.
“At one point I believe that American Airlines had made such a request,” Hurst added.
He said the only airline “that we know that we have provided support for is LIAT.”
Last week the Cabinet of Antigua and Barbuda agreed to write off $8.5 million dollars in debt owed to the country by LIAT.

And that’s where you guy’s loyalty should be,to Liat,
Hope the government don’t cave under pressure.
Well done Government of Antigua! Its about time Caribbean Governments STOP subsidizing foreign airlines and not there own. Caribbean Governments pay out millions of USD to foreign airlines and NOT there own LIAT.
When LIAT ask for this same Revenue Guarantee Caribbean Governments say NO.
Now look at what happen to LIAT.
Its Time Caribbean Governments support there own.
Good move. One Covid is pass and traffic picks up, the volume will be of such that British Airways would not need that level of revenue guarantee. Virgin has been struggling badly even before Covid, it may soon drop most of the Caribbean. Barbados may stay because of pride but they will have to put money into their LIAT replacement ( before that too eventually folds).
It is commendable to not give in to Virgin, however, you have to remember, No Virgin, No Tourists, No Tourists leave the island with a distinct lack of revenue.
Pre-covid, virgin didn’t come to Antigua on a daily basis so we shouldn’t miss that level of tourist that much. Another loyal airline will fill that slot. We must be strong as a government!
British Airways will fill the slot..good move by the Government of Antigua and Barbuda and the government of St. Lucia.
Keep on depending on tourism. You already see where we’re at.
Yeah we saw where we at. Antigua got developed. Like if it was Antigua alone that was affected by a GOBAL HEALTH CRISIS. Like the entire CRUISE INDUSTRY LOST 32 BILLION DOLLARS as a result of the crisis. Some of y’all so damn political it turns y’all into one full blown dunce.
If u guys think they weren’t paying British airways you must be dreaming no major airline is coming to that region without revenue guarantees so just take the lip service like good little citizens .
Good job by your government not to give in to Virgin Atlantic. Over here in the UK they have pulled out of London Gatwick airport and the prices of flights has more than doubled (at least for when we wanted to travel in 2021) to Antigua and then they ask you for a subsidy. Fly BA.
WHEN IS LIAT COMING BACK TO FLY LIKE A BIRD INTO THE SKY. GASTON BROWNE WE NEED SOME ANSWERS.YOU DID SAY 90 DAYS.ALL THINGS HAVE AN END.WHEN WOULD THOSE 90 DAYS END,TAP DAWG.
I’m still trying to find out how I can get my money back from LIAT for cancelling my ticket due to liquidation.
