The Antigua and Barbuda Port Authority has acquired a new Liebherr LHM 420 mobile harbour crane worth US$6.2m, replacing a unit that had been in service since 2001.
Port Manager Darwin Telemaque said the old crane had become unreliable and costly, disrupting cargo operations and hurting efficiency. The new machine, he added, offers greater lifting capacity, advanced technology and improved safety standards.

Capable of handling up to 124 tonnes with a reach of 16 containers, the crane is designed for versatility, energy efficiency and compliance with international regulations.
Features such as remote monitoring and predictive maintenance are expected to reduce downtime and cut costs.
The investment is seen as critical to positioning Antigua and Barbuda as a more competitive shipping hub in the Eastern Caribbean, with faster and more reliable cargo handling expected to boost both trade and the wider economy.
