Port Authority Staff Receive Bonuses as Chair Hurst Highlights Financial Success During Budget Debate
The Antigua and Barbuda Port Authority has paid staff bonuses alongside regular salaries, marking a milestone in the agency’s financial turnaround.
Senator Mary-Claire Hurst, who also serves as Chairperson of the Port Authority, made the announcement on Tuesday while debating the 2025 Appropriation Bill in the Senate.
She described the bonuses as a reflection of the institution’s improved fiscal performance and operational efficiency.
“Yesterday, we paid bonuses, and we’re also paying salaries,” Hurst stated, attributing the achievement to teamwork and sound financial management. “It has not been easy, but we are now at a stage where we can do both.”
The Senator credited the authority’s success to its workforce, management, and directors. “Without them, there is no me,” she said, extending her gratitude to those who have worked to transform the organization.
Hurst also highlighted operational improvements at the Port Authority, including increased cargo volumes, streamlined processes to reduce congestion, and consistent loan repayments.
The announcement came during her presentation on the 2025 budget, which outlines plans to sustain economic growth in key sectors such as construction, tourism, and public administration. Hurst praised the government’s fiscal strategies, which she said have bolstered employment and economic activity.
Staff training remains a priority for the Port Authority, with Hurst emphasizing the importance of preparing employees for a competitive global market. “Training makes our staff more marketable, and while that creates risks, it is a necessary investment,” she said.
