Prime Minister Gaston Browne has warned that his government will no longer tolerate corruption, even if it involves powerful business backers.

Speaking in Parliament’s Lower House on Thursday, Browne said his administration is adopting a zero-tolerance approach toward malfeasance in state agencies and revenue departments.

“Many of these individuals are among the largest campaign contributors, but we are prepared to sacrifice them if necessary,” he told lawmakers.

He stressed that protecting public revenue and ensuring it benefits the population is a top priority, signalling a crackdown on under-the-table deals and revenue leakage that have affected past administrations.

  1. Why didn’t you stop it from the beginning? You tolerated corruption all those years and now, this one has boiled over from the pot so now, you’re trying to extinguish 🧯 the fire. What a sad state Antigua is in!

  2. The loansharks are probably still making heavy demands while the Cabinet is being stingy. I wish there was a way to know what we have given up to these businesses for their contributions to the Antigua Labour Party to enable their win at the polls. By his own admission,he is really presiding over a very corrupt government.

  3. I wonder if another Minister was in charge of Public Works, what would have been the response. I’m sure they would have been asked to resign or relocated. Let’s see if that happens in this instance.
Young Mr. Antonio could not have acted without his cousin Minister knowing.
Nothing less than a full commission of Inquiry will do. If Jamal Pringle cyaah see dat. Then boss leave politics.

  4. UPP didn’t bring in half the money that this ABLP government brought into the Treasury, or may I say should have brought in.

I do not say that because this administration had some financial Zar in its corner, but by mere default of the global market at the time period of each government.

People need to argue in context, and break down, otherwise listeners will run with the first sentence they hear.
UPP was in office for all the years the US was in its hardest recession in its history, where 75% of our tourism market survives on. That means way less revenue coming into the Treasury by way of duties, taxes, and Vat.

While this administration came into office at the exact time that the US recovered from that same recession. That means tourist were spending again and vestments were flowing..so more duties, taxes, VAT was pouring into the Treasury 5 times the rate as it was during Americas recession.

So where is all that money? While the UPP had to come up with creative ways (the same as Obama had to do) to keep the struggling economy a float, this administration just had to sit back and just rake in all the money and manage it.

And one more point..if it wasn’t for Allen Stanford and his corrupt billions keeping Antigua a float during those recession times, Antigua would have sank to the bottom of the see. He also was a big part of the American recession, tanking the stock market.

So these are all facts. So to sit there and give this current administration a pass for their blatant lack their of any regulations, is in itself a travesty. Where are all the billions from the CIP, the taxes from all these massive hotels that were built in the pass 15 years, the VAT that were collected, the duties from all the ships that are constantly piled up at the pier?

Nothing, nothing to show for it..instead of a massive surplus, this administration had to go out and raise rates across the board.ABST, vehicle fees, and taxes at the airport on travelers..

All that money is gone, and not one damn person is in jail.

No wonder they killed Asot, because he knew everything. The same for the customs officer.

  5. Is there a way the government, CHAPA and consumer affairs (don’t the exact name) can establish a governing oversight on shady contractors who scam home owners? Too many contractors in Antigua will take people hard earn money to build homes that are not within the plans or just outright thief people money. I know the homeowners also have to be accountable to monitor a build, but we need to also have a regulatory establishment to hold contractors accountable. This establishment can provide a list of reputable contractors in Antigua and Barbuda and file complaints by homeowners.

  6. Mr. PM, but what do you expect to happen really? You are the one who gave your ministers permission to enrich themselves. Don’t you expect this mandate to trickle down the ranks? Please sir! Give me a break! This is what happens when you have skewed foresight; you create loopholes for people you think are too dunce to walk through, to just breeze through. Stop underestimating your people’s intelligence. They can see through all of it and who can pilfer will continue to pilfer because the shoddy precedence already set, started from the top down.

  7. @spar par. Young Antonio acted on his own as his substantive Minister rarely goes to work. What I don’t understand is the transferring of corruption. His replacement was removed from the PM’s office for the same thing. So Gaston is playing musical chairs while sweeping everything under the carpet. This calls for a criminal inquiry not a public inquiry because I understand that evidence from that cannot be used in Court as it will be obtained under non legal circumstances.

  10. I’ve read about this type of thing time and time again.

Isn’t it just funny that when people have already made a shed load of money, they suddenly preach from the pulpit about dealing with corruption; transparency; and cracking down on “other” such departments. Give me a break!

Let’s hope now that a plethora of whistle-blowers will come forward and blow the lids off the whole lot these gift induced money-grabbing authoritarians who wouldn’t know the difference between the words INTEGRITY and DISHONESTY.

Dear Lord only You can turn this darkness into light 🙏🏾

  11. Most of these business are owned by foreign investors or foreigners where they transfer their money in thousands of dollars monthly to offshore banks and also to their countries of origin. While Antigua and Barbuda country revenue system is short in collecting it due taxes from these businesses.

  12. PM Brown, that is what happened when you have friends and company mixed with the business of operating the country. They and their families and friends will contribute towards the general election and even vote overwhelming while they are robbing the country in paying their correct share of taxes and the Custom duties on their importation of goods shipment. While the small man and woman who bring in a barrel suffered at the cost of Custom duties.

  13. I love you, Mr. PM but what do you expect to happen really? You are the one who gave your ministers permission to enrich themselves. Don’t you expect this mandate to trickle down the ranks? 14. was in Public Works for 2 and a half months and he was able to purchase over 200 vehicles in that short time? I do not believe that. Something is fishy. These allegations don’t stand up to scrutiny.
