Prime Minister Gaston Browne says his government will spend about $2 million over the next month to provide building materials for vulnerable families, part of a plan to accelerate home repairs under the Housing Assistance Program.
Browne made the announcement on his weekly Browne and Browne Show, saying funds have already been allocated and orders for supplies are being placed.
“We just made about $1.4 million available last week, and we may take another probably $600,000 from another facility. So we intend to spend about $2 million within the next 30 days to acquire building material,” Browne said..
The prime minister explained that distributing materials — such as plywood, sideboards, and roofing supplies — would allow more families to address urgent needs while communities rally to assist with labor. He said the approach was designed to complement ongoing home construction, which takes longer to deliver.
Browne added that the government is also considering subsidized paint to help households improve the appearance of their homes. He said the effort was part of a broader strategy to uplift poorer communities and ensure that “no one is left behind.”
The building materials program is expected to launch with the next shipment arriving on island, which Browne said should take place within the next 30 to 40 days.
