The Marijuana Commission in Antigua and Barbuda has secured ethical approval to begin formal surveys on cannabis use.

Commission spokesperson Bishop Charlesworth Browne confirmed the approval, marking a significant step in the investigation.

After months of virtual meetings, the group recently held its first in-person session and has updated the Cabinet on its progress.

Details of the study remain limited, with findings to be shared at a later stage.

The Commission, chaired by Dr. Kwasi Tonge, was established in December 2023 to assess the impact of marijuana decriminalization, particularly on young people.

Government officials, including Ambassador Lionel Hurst, have emphasized the need for evidence-based policies, with institutions like the University of the West Indies expected to provide scientific insight.

The six-member Commission includes psychologist Dr. Griffin Benjamin, data officer Audie Browne, and researcher Victoria Dyer.
