Antigua and Barbuda has the lowest number of refugees seeking asylum in Caricom

6

Jamaica recorded the highest figure at 11,453, accounting for over 60% of the regional total. The Bahamas followed at 2,742, then Trinidad and Tobago at 1,824.

Barbados, Dominica, and Saint Lucia each recorded between 400 and 800. At the lower end, St. Vincent and the Grenadines reported 337 and Antigua and Barbuda 133.

Across most countries, asylum seekers outnumber those with formal refugee status. Jamaica’s 11,453 total includes 9,176 asylum seekers and 2,277 recognised refugees The Bahamas shows an even wider gap: 2,567 asylum seekers versus 175 refugees.

For the majority, a final determination is still pending.

Research has documented several factors that lead Caribbean nationals to seek protection abroad, including LGBTQ+ persecution, gang-related threats, and domestic violence – though individual circumstances vary widely.

  1. I guess that’s good news.

I’m sure Antigua has higher proportion of migrants workers than most Caricom nations though.

  2. Those are the ones we know who came through the channel. What about those who came with assistance from the higher-ups? Most of them use us as conduits to move NORTH. Over 900 from Africa came in February 2023 per the former Government Mouthpiece, who then changed his story after they gave interviews with the local media. All but the 13 who drowned in March 29 2023, made it to the U.S. We had similar incidents with Middle Eastern and Chinese Nationalities in which the government was complicit. Where are they now?

  3. Amazing they file for refugee status but then come home to visit. I hear in the uk they have decided that such visits will negate your status

  4. Fool me twice Gaston, you are trying to trick us by secretly creating this deportees situation and now you come with the solutions that the amount is just basically 3 deportees that you are mitigating by naming them asylum seekers so it is far from our minds that it’s murderers and thieves been deported to antigua, oh how conning you are Gaston and can’t be trusted, so when 900 deportees march in we would have been in a inculcated desensitize state created by your ANR paper.

  5. I wonder what sort of persecution or violence those 133 Antiguans were fleeing from. It’s this kind of fraud that gives the rest of us a bad name.

  6. Well be on the lookout for the US refugees that are on the way and its WAYYYY more than 10!!! The PM has you all suckered up and fooled again
