Government Statement on Opposition Actions Over Whit Holiday Weekend

The Cabinet of Antigua and Barbuda has been informed of documented incidents of vandalism, intimidation, and trespassing on private property by leaders of the Opposition United Progressive Party (UPP) during the recent Whit holiday weekend. These actions occurred during visits to several hotels and private properties, under the pretense of advocating for public access to beaches.

It is important to reiterate that, both as a matter of law and consistent with the policy of the Gaston Browne Administration, all beaches in Antigua and Barbuda are public and are free for access by citizens and residents.

The Cabinet views the Opposition’s conduct as a deliberate act of deception—an attempt to shift focus to a new issue following their unsuccessful efforts to gain public support through the dissemination of false and defamatory claims. These include baseless allegations against Prime Minister Browne, his family, public officials, and the nation, particularly relating to the already-resolved matter of the sale of the Alfa Nero yacht.

The Cabinet strongly condemns these acts of trespassing, property damage, and intimidation of workers. Such behavior not only threatens the country’s investment climate but also jeopardizes the fragile tourism sector, which is vital to the livelihoods of thousands of Antiguans and Barbudans and essential to the nation’s economic stability. One major investor has already indicated his intention to pursue legal action against individuals caught on video committing unlawful acts on his property.

While the Cabinet recognizes the Opposition’s continued display of disregard for national interests, it urges them to begin acting responsibly in an effort to restore some measure of credibility as a viable political alternative.

    1. This cabinet is too much!
      Smh!
      Give me a break!
Tell your investors to stop fencing off the beach ⛱️
That’s what cabinet needs to do.
You are a one man cabinet.😅

    2. Business as usual for the pathetic opposition. Noise and anarchy. Those are the qualifications they display daily as they seek governance of this country. Of course it’s cockroach season so there are many around to crawl into every container of stale/rotting food. There is no doubt that the beaches in Antigua and Barbuda are OWNED by its legitimate sons and daughters – an inalienable right. Similarly every home/land owner is endowed with the inalienable right full and peaceful occupation of said property against arbitrary incursions and trespass onto said property. Where there’s a breakdown in this understanding, especially when the government is wittingly or unwittingly involved , then the government of the day MUST find alternatives in the interest of peace and fairness. But jumping up and down in front of cameras like wild untàme orangutan cannot be even considered a path to a solution. Despite the free performances of the orangutan, the government MUST move with alacrity to ensure FREE ACCESS to ALL of our beaches , whether or not this entails creating new beach access offerings.. One orangutan can’t stop the show!

    3. If V.C Bird was here and in his young days he do break down those gates to the beach, he joined the willikies people in the 1970’s to tear down a fence that separated black swimmers from white swimmers, that’s now the same property that Gaston son bought and flip it, probably back to a next racist.

    4. ALP knows exactly how to appeal to these interlopers for their votes. It is clear that they are against us, as their leader has petitioned the Chinese to colonize us. The slave mentality is really an integral part of that organization.
