Talks continue on cargo aircraft deal to enhance regional supply chains

The government of Antigua and Barbuda is in active discussions with regional transport companies to establish a cargo aircraft partnership aimed at improving trade and logistics across the Eastern Caribbean.

Director-General of Communications Maurice Merchant confirmed that while the talks are progressing, the procurement of a government-owned cargo plane remains on hold until the outcome of these negotiations is determined.

“If the government is able to come to an arrangement with these companies, then the acquisition of a cargo plane would be seamless,” Merchant said during Friday’s Cabinet press briefing.

He explained that the initiative is part of a wider plan to strengthen regional trade links and supply chains, particularly within the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS). The move could also facilitate access to goods from nearby markets such as the Dominican Republic, where items can be sourced more cost-effectively.

Merchant said the administration views the initiative as an opportunity to make regional commerce more efficient and resilient, adding that it would support efforts to deepen Antigua and Barbuda’s role in regional trade and transport logistics

  1. I LIAT runs cargo from Puerto Rico and other Caribbean island, that will be a good thing the government would have done to give LIAT a true private investment footing in the industry.
