Customs officials in Antigua and Barbuda are stepping up efforts to combat drug trafficking following a surge in seizures last year.
Comptroller of Customs Raju Boddu highlighted the nation’s strategic role in the transatlantic drug trade, warning of growing threats from synthetic drugs such as fentanyl derivatives, ecstasy, and LSD.
In 2024, the Customs & Excise Division recorded 24 successful drug interdictions, seizing 375 pounds of cannabis and 40 pounds of cocaine. Officials are now enhancing international collaboration, working closely with the World Customs Organization and other agencies to strengthen intelligence-sharing.
Surveillance has increased at key entry points, including VC Bird International Airport, Jolly Harbour, and English Harbour, where private yachts are inspected for smuggling attempts.
Customs is also refining its cargo screening protocols and urging public support in the fight against drug trafficking.

why are they not tackling the root causes of drug trafficking? This should also be a priority.
Drug dealers are going find ways around all these Surveillance and Safety Measures.
Good to see Customs taking action.
The Prime Minister, Gaston Browne speak about installing a scanning machine at the Port years ago. Has he done that yet? Dominica 🇩🇲 and St Kitts & Nevis have a scanning machine. This PM speak so powerful on his radio station on Saturday and still no fruit to his words. We need the scanner at the Port as promised Mr PM! This will make the process of clearing barrels and boxes, especially containers easier and reduce time customers spent at the Port on a daily basis.
The dogs…where are the dogs??
Too many times the dogs appear AFTER shipments are leaving our ports. This is too coincidental.
We have the tools. Use them. English Harbour is a breathing ground when the harbour is full.
Time to stamp it out and send a strong message that we don’t want that crap here.
