Antigua Cruise Port opens new terminal as cruise arrivals climb

Antigua and Barbuda has officially opened a new cruise terminal in St. John’s, marking another phase in the country’s long-term investment in cruise tourism and its partnership with Global Ports Holding.

Prime Minister Gaston Browne said the new terminal signals to international partners that Antigua and Barbuda is “open” and “thriving,” noting that the government has invested an estimated US$300 million in the cruise tourism sector over the past three decades.

He said the 30-year concessions agreement signed with Global Ports Holding in 2019 reaffirmed the government’s commitment to positioning the country as a regional leader in cruise tourism.

The terminal opening forms part of a broader upland development project being executed by Antigua Cruise Port. General Manager Gaspar George said the upland works are expected to be completed by July this year.

Officials said the wider development will reshape the port landscape, with plans for improved passenger flow, new commercial spaces, experiential offerings and stronger connectivity between the port and the city. Additional renovations are also planned for the Heritage Quay area, with completion targeted for early 2028.

Tourism Minister Charles Fernandez said cruise arrivals have doubled since the country entered into its agreement with Global Ports Holding, and projections indicate that Antigua and Barbuda could receive about one million cruise passengers in 2026.

Officials said the modernization of the cruise product has improved passenger flow and the overall visitor experience, while integrating local businesses more deliberately into the cruise ecosystem and strengthening Antigua and Barbuda’s position as a home-porting destination.

  1. A Guyanese friend recently told me that she went to Guyana for the Christmas holidays. After spending the last 10 years living and working in Antigua. She said that she now considers Antigua her home. What was striking to her was upon returning to Antigua, she did not realize how run down Antigua had become.
The roads in Antigua are abominable. Every week government ministers and care takes showing of concrete roads constructed in Villages. Yet the Highway are in such bad shape, that if a tourist refuses to pay for a tour they should be allowed to go free.
Not one more nail on any side road should be used until the All Saints Main road from west bus station to England Harbor is completed. Then you have America road , then Potters or the newly named Burning Flames highway.( should be ashamed to name a road in such state like that to the iconic band. I am told that the equipment that are being used on the play field are supplied by the government. That is why these heavy duty equipment. are parked more than they are working. What I am saying is that at this point we should be using all our resources , equipment and human to repair our roads. Then Jonas road from the MT. Joy round about to the Anglican Church in All Saints. Then Potworks Road going right through to Bethesda up the Piccadilly junction leading to St. James hotel. The Collin’s road . Until those roads are fixed the cruise passengers experience will be poor. Cruise passengers mostly go on island tours. There are other roads that needs improvement as well- the south roads / Fig tree drive right up to the Roman hill. Hay almost forget the Swetes :?Buckley’s road from Roman Hill by the Church to KFC Buckley’s Line.
We as citizens ourselves should be demanding that the government make these roads a priority. We are being extorted in road taxes and absolutely nothing has happened. Well except to pour concrete into the hands of a few comrades contractors and Serian contractors.

  2. Frankly Speaking…I Concur….Sometimes I wonder if the government likes helping the auto body repair and auto parts shops….The roads are horrible in this country….

  3. Saying the country have no jobs is no longer a sticking point cause there are many opportunities for employment here
