Antigua and Barbuda is aiming at 100% clean power by 2030 and has become the first non-Pacific country to endorse the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty which aims at phasing out oil, gas and coal.

This was disclosed by Prime Minister Gaston Browne in a Project Syndicate article published in Stabroek News.

He noted that artificial intelligence and plummeting costs of energy storage systems are helping to match variable renewable-energy supplies by as much as 20 percent with fluctuations in demand, facilitating the integration of renewables into electricity grids.

He added that advanced battery technology is reducing the need for back-up supplies of fossil fuels. In fact,  Browne noted in his article, current trends are suggesting that most emerging and developing economies will outgrow their need for Liquid Natural Gas (LNG)  within a decade.

  1. When will these people stop attempting to fool all of the people in this country?

Just ask yourself this simple question: How long is the agreement period for the L.N.G. project government is involved in?

Now, is the government position in this article consistent with the length of that agreement?

    Trupz.

  2. wait, wasnt he crowing about how great it was that the government had invested in the west indian oil company last week?

  3. Barbuda must secede from the Antigua & Barbuda Union.

  4. ARNOLD, Maybe Gaston is having a change of heart on WIOC because as a shareholder myself I have never gotten more than $200 and little bit each year since I invested my money, it will take me several years to get back what I put in. Gaston made it sound so great I couldn’t resist, now I’m not working and that can’t do shit for me

  5. We are in 2025. In five years time we would be in the year 2030. Today, Antigua and Barbuda is 100 percent dependent and reliant on diesel generators to provide power. Clean power is electricity generated from sources that don’t emit greenhouse games or other pollutants such as solar, wind, geothermal and hydro power. Fuel generators like the ones that we use to generate electricity are some of the worst when it comes to polluting and damaging the environment. Whilst I can understand and appreciate the Prime Ministers goal of providing clean power at some future point, 2030 is unrealistic, improbable and beyond expectations. These things comes with significant cost and I don’t know how the government or APUA could afford this expenditure anytime soon.
With significant pressure coming from the US in relation to our dealings with Venezuela, we might be forced to look elsewhere for sources of gas, hence the reason why we might have to upgrade from those fuel drinking generators, much sooner than we anticipated.

  6. The PM can say that Antigua and Barbuda is aiming at 100% clean power by 2030 but this is wishing thinking and/or pure nonsense. There is absolutely no chance of this happening in five years. It’s simply not feasible.

  7. Prime Minister unless your planning to use this foolish logo for your campaign to fool some of the people. It is unrealistic for you to make that promise unless government is planning to give everyone in Antigua solar panel even if, man power to connect them and APUA will have to improved their systems man power for that to remember Antigua has been fixing the water system for years. A pothole can’t even get fixing in 5 years stop taking Antiguans for fools.

  8. Is this a fearful tip toe around the hadeeds, threatening their support when the ALP is in trouble, he Gaston done sign some agreement with hadeed for power generation into 2050, stop fooling us and say nice things because you are in trouble internationally, and none a this solar panels crap is affordable to the poor and the maintenance is even worst, you must a cook up something with some white company you have interest in to extort more money from the consolidated funds. That APUA management should be brought to an inquiry, the GM and electricity manager.
