Antigua Cabinet Considers Extending School Hours to Curb Student Loitering and Boost Academics

The Antigua and Barbuda Cabinet is considering extending school hours to reduce student loitering in St John’s by introducing sports, agricultural programs, and after-school classes.

Prime Minister’s Chief of Staff Lionel Hurst noted that discussions with parents and the teachers’ union will assess the proposal’s feasibility, as some government ministers believe it could enhance academic success.

Hurst emphasized the benefits of sports for student health, adding that while there’s consensus to proceed, input from multiple stakeholders remains essential.

  1. More time for the secondary students? They already have more hours at school than the Printing! In that case, put both Secondary and Primary from 9:00-3:00 and let the debate end!

  2. Extremely ridiculous considering some secondary and primary schools already end at 3:00pm…Wa allyuh wa do? Burnout the pickaneyga an dem?
Let parents play their role, there’s only so much you can do as a nation…

  3. If I finishing school 1:40pm and I not going home till 3pm, 4pm sometimes 5pm…..Now I have a more valid excuse to be home late especailly if my parent/parents work shifts and dont have any help…..Their are parents who are really struggling and have to work weird hours to pay rent and buy food….The Police can only do as much as they can to curb the loitering issue…So I dunno if this solution will really help…..

  4. That’s all good n well on paper, but while y’all discussing extending school hrs, y’all intend 2hire facilitators 4those extended hrs? Or do u intend 2pay teachers 4the extended hrs their being asked 2work? Bearing in mind that back pay is owed 4over 20yrs, plus the fact that the overall current salary is due 4an upgrade, as it grossly lacking in keeping up with 2day’s inflation n high cost of living….

  5. I think that this whole school ours should revamp from colonial hours set by Britain when our parents had to go to the fields early to cut cane and pick cotton, sometimes when you see young boys and girls in the dark 5 a.m in the morning catching school bus, that child would have had to wake up 3:30 a m to prepare, that child will be sleeping in school and won’t have the alertness to function academically, and by the way rape or any crime can occur in those dark mornings, look at the American countries who freed themselves from Britain how they set proper timing for school, I concur that all schools should start from 9 a m to 3 p.m, time our politicians and leaders incentivise our people with the. Substance of independence, we must benifit from our independence, not still celebrating all things colonials to our detriment, calling villages and school by massage slave master names.

  7. When I went to school, the hours of operation was from 9am to 3pm. There was a change after I finish tenure because of over crowded school plants. I am of the view that we must return to giving more hours to our children for full academic development at the secondary level. This extended time period should be used to inculcate cevic studies, caribbean culture and caribbean history. I am in full support of the extension of the hours in school for our ordinary level proficiency students.
