Antigua experienced historic rainfall this February, with record-breaking totals on February 7 and 8. The V. C. Bird International Airport recorded 49.4 mm (1.94 in) on Wednesday and 58.9 mm (2.32 in) on Thursday, surpassing previous one-day records.
Thursday, February 8, became the wettest February day ever recorded, exceeding the 1982 record of 39.0 mm (1.54 in).
This event, statistically rare at less than 0.2 percent, surpassed the rainfall of most previous Februarys and months at VCBIA.
The week’s rainfall also made February 2024 the wettest February since 1928, with a total of 153.7 mm (6.05 in), surpassing the previous record of 130.8 mm (5.15 in) in 1982.
The rare cold front causing this extreme weather was accurately forecasted early in the week, with minimal impacts and only minor flooding.
Neighboring islands also experienced record-breaking rainfall, with estimates of 50 to 200 mm (2 to 8 in) of anomalous rainfall. Typically, February is the second driest month in Antigua, with an average of around 50.0 mm (1.97 in) of rainfall.
