PM Browne: Public Works to Focus on Climate-Resilient Concrete Roads
Prime Minister Gaston Browne has announced that Antigua & Barbuda will prioritize concrete roads as part of its infrastructure strategy, citing climate resilience and long-term durability.
Speaking on Pointe FM, Browne explained that extreme weather conditions, including intense heat waves and heavy rainfall, have accelerated the deterioration of asphalt roads, making a shift to concrete necessary.
“The issue with road damage is not exclusively due to poor construction. The extreme heat melts the tar, and torrential rains wash it away. That’s why we need more concrete roads, especially in rural areas,” he said.
The government has already invested in its own concrete production plant and will scale up operations to meet the demand for road projects. “We recently acquired a pugmill, which will allow us to mix concrete for road construction. Our goal is to build climate-resilient roads that will last 20 to 30 years,” Browne stated.
The move is part of a broader $100 million road development initiative, funded through local banks, to accelerate the pace of road repairs and new construction.
“This funding is specifically earmarked for road infrastructure, and we are ensuring accountability by requiring engineering oversight on all projects,” he added.
Browne instructed the Public Works Department to focus on concrete road construction and ensure long-term value for money. “I have told officials that this investment must result in durable roads. When people ask in 20 years where the money went, they should be able to see the roads we built,” he said.
The shift to concrete roads is expected to reduce long-term maintenance costs and improve road quality across Antigua & Barbuda.
