The Antigua and Barbuda Union of Teachers (ABUT) celebrated signing a new collective bargaining agreement with the government, marking the first such agreement since 2008.
The ceremony, featuring Chief Establishment Officer Francia Shepperd and ABUT’s President Casroy Charles and Secretary General Sharon Kelsick, resulted in a 14 percent salary increase for all public sector workers, effective from January 2018 to December 31, 2024.
This milestone addresses longstanding issues, including enhanced school security, duty-free allowances for teachers buying vehicles, and teacher reclassification.
Shepperd praised the cooperative relationship and efforts of the negotiation team, led by former president Dr. Colin Greene, and ABUT’s membership for their support.
With around 1300 members, ABUT views this agreement as a significant achievement despite challenges, now reaping the benefits of their diligent work.

Teachers deserve much more.
We need to treat them better.
This 14% increase is for 8 years? What is the break-down per year?
Long overdue, and well done to the union negotiators.
This government was under tremendous pressure to give our hard-pressed and hardworking teachers this pay rise.
This is just the start for our KEY workforce…
Wait are they talking about the 9 ℅ increase all public sector workers just got. How the union get praised for that when it was a decision by the Government for all them workers. This story for real I still rying to figure out when we got the 5 percent that made it 14 and now the union say its their fault we got that raise. I am totally confused. I wonder if I CAN GET BACK ALL THE MONEY I pay theunion cause me nah understand them. I think they feel we chupid and want to pull wool over we eye. The raise we got in January had nothing to do with their negotiations.
Quite agree with you @Confused. Gaston Browne just used them for a photo opp. Did teachers really get 14% ? I never heard them saying anything during the talks by the DAWG. I tell you, the unions here are a joke. If you recall, Azille condescended to an embarrassing 1% and McKellar sided with the government with the poison mandate.
There was this big hoopla about upgrades, and rightfully so, but they fell short of so many other things.
We need clarification. Was the 14% the one initiated by the DAWG? If so, why the patting on the back by this union?
