Antigua & Barbuda Swimmers Deliver Strong Performances at OECS Championships
Team Antigua & Barbuda produced a series of impressive results so far at the 33rd OECS Swimming Championships, earning multiple medals and setting new records while maintaining fourth place in the team standings.
At the end of the second day, Antigua & Barbuda had accumulated 732 points, behind Grenada (836), St. Lucia (803), and St. Vincent (747.5). Despite some swimmers competing while unwell, the team continued to display determination and national pride.
Record-Breaking Efforts
Ethan Stubbs-Greene and Jadon Wuilliez led the way with record-setting swims. Stubbs-Greene established a new OECS and age-group record in the 200-metre freestyle (1:51.24), while Wuilliez broke OECS records in both the 50-metre breaststroke (27.89) and 50-metre freestyle. Wuilliez also secured silver in the 200-metre freestyle (1:56.27), with teammate Stefano Mitchell claiming bronze (1:56.37).
Rising Youth Talent
The country’s young swimmers added to the medal tally with standout performances. Nine-year-old Isabel Nicholas captured gold in the 200-metre freestyle (2:29.34) and later earned another gold in the 50-metre backstroke (37.14). Teammates Charlotte Gold and Anna Sukumaran joined her on the podium in the 200-metre freestyle, winning silver (2:41.86) and bronze (2:44.69) respectively.
Among the boys, Akasion Shepard took bronze in the 8-and-under 25-metre backstroke (21.56), and Alessandro Bazzoni earned silver in the 11–12 100-metre backstroke (1:09.51).
Development Pathway Division
Thirteen-year-old Anya DeGannes claimed silver in the 13–14 100-metre backstroke (1:11.54) after previously taking gold in both the 200-metre freestyle and 100-metre butterfly.
Determined Team Effort
Officials praised the swimmers’ perseverance, noting that several achieved personal bests while competing through illness. Coaches described the performances as evidence of Antigua and Barbuda’s growing depth across age groups.
The OECS Championships continue through the weekend, with Team Antigua & Barbuda seeking to build on their momentum in the final sessions.
