The Burton-Nibbs International Airport (a state-of-the-art facility) is located on the island of Barbuda and set to replace the existing Barbuda Codrington Airport.
The new airport cost US$55 million and is scheduled to launch commercial operations on October 3, 2024.
The development of the airport marks a significant milestone for Antigua & Barbuda. This will be the country’s second international airport, joining the VC Bird International Airport in St. John’s.
To ensure a seamless transition, the Barbuda Codrington Airport will be closed at sunset on October 2, 2024. The new airport will then officially open at sunrise the following day.
The project has involved substantial upgrades, including the construction of a 7,100-foot runway. The government has invested over US$14 million in the airport’s development, which also encompasses ongoing training programs for fire service personnel, airport staff and other key personnel.
The airport’s namesakes, Burton and Nibbs, were prominent figures in Antigua & Barbuda’s political history. They served as Members of Parliament representing Barbuda and played a crucial role in shaping the country’s constitution during the Lancaster House conference in 1980.

It is being reported that the Burton Family have expresses to the Cabinet that they do not want their father’s name attached to the airport.
I believe that the family request should be respected and honoured.
Same thing was said from the Late Tim Hector’s family about a badwud cussing dude being given an award in his name!
FORWARD EVER! BACKWARD NEVER!!! #NextLevel
@ Lets Goooooooo. Jus’ so. All kind a nit-picking for nothing! Sickening.
Time enough that Barbuda CONTRIBUTES to the development of A&B. Time to stop depending on central government for subvention!
Kudos to the GASTON A. BROWNE ADMINISTRATION for the foresight and vision.
“Where there is no vision, the people perish” ~Proverbs 29:18
International Airport,???Check the requirements for an international airport and stop making Antigua look stupid.
An International Airport is an airport that has the necessary facilities and infrastructure to handle international flights. This includes the capability to manage customs, immigration, and quarantine procedures for passengers and cargo arriving from or departing to destinations outside the country.
This airport has been constructed with no due process as required by law. It is a great example of Ecocide.
Construction started with no planning approval and the court has not heard the substance of the case.
Is that the mark of a responsible government and climate champion leader ; or just plain old hypocrisy?
This runway will cost the taxpayers us$41 million, not the quoted 14.
Whether you agree that this needed to be done, it was not in any shape or form done in accordance with our legislation and policies and flies in the face of our treaty duty and obligations.
Notes From A Native Son Of The Rock! Name it Thomas Barnard International Airport! People of African Descent residing on Antigua and Barbuda must be educated about their History and that most important Historical Referent Point! “a people without knowledge of their past history, origin, and culture is like a tree without roots.” Hon. Marcus Garvey!
