The government of Antigua and Barbuda wants to develop an internet-based platform for COVID-19 similar to the one launched by the Jamaican government.
“I had a significant engagement with a company that has developed an end to end solution for the government of Jamaica and as a best practice, we are evaluating it”, Information Minister Melford Nicholas told reporters at a media briefing on Thursday.
Jamaica’s health management, information and public support technology platform called “jamcovid19” was created by Amber Group, a technology conglomerate, based in Jamaica at no cost to the Jamaican government.
According to Jamaica media, the interactive features of the website and mobile app include real-time COVID-19 country and global analytics; knowledge resources on COVID19; digital self-assessment and reporting tool for citizens and COVID-19 testing appointment booking system at Government testing locations, which enables citizens to do a self-assessment and choose location, date and time for testing.
Another feature is a controlled re-entry immigration module that allows Jamaican residents stranded overseas to apply for a travel authorization.
A help feature also provides citizens with one click dialing access to Police, Medical, Senior Citizen assistance, Disabled assistance and assistance for victims of gender-based violence.
“Myself and my team, last night after Cabinet, would have had the engagement with the company, facilitated by the Office of the Prime Minister in Jamaica and as soon as we have the commercial arrangements sorted out, we’ll move toward rapid implementation”, Nicholas said.
“I think that will satisfy some of the ongoing pressing issues that a number of persons would have had. I believe from what I’ve seen, it gives automatic and clear information as to all aspects of how the process is being managed and will be managed and I think it will really satisfy some of the issues that filter into these types of press briefings and maybe lead to sometimes understandable speculation”, he added.
The Minister said he believed in “the next few days we will be in a position to make another presentation to the public as to what that new platform and the new dashboard and windows of information that will become available to the public.”
