The government of Antigua and Barbuda has outlined plans to expand its cruise tourism sector through a partnership with Global Ports Holding.

The initiative aims to increase annual cruise arrivals to more than two million visitors.

Prime Minister Gaston Browne described the agreement as a strategic move to enhance the country’s cruise tourism infrastructure while ensuring long-term economic benefits.

He stated that the collaboration would help modernize port facilities and improve the overall visitor experience.

“Our objective is to create a world-class cruise destination that meets the needs of both visitors and local businesses,” Browne said.

“With this expansion, we anticipate significant economic gains for Antigua and Barbuda.”

Under the partnership, Global Ports Holding has committed to investing in port enhancements, including upgraded berths and passenger amenities.

The government expects these developments to attract more cruise lines and encourage longer port stays.

Tourism officials have pointed to the increasing demand for Caribbean cruise destinations and believe that Antigua and Barbuda’s improved facilities will position the country as a key stop on regional itineraries.

They also see potential for growth in visitor spending, benefiting local businesses, taxi operators, and tour providers.

The government has yet to specify a timeline for reaching the two-million-visitor milestone, but officials remain confident that the investments will yield long-term benefits for the economy.

  1. Antigua recieved an impressive 823,955 cruise passengers in 2024 so to reach two million annual cruise arrivals is many years away and would take a lot of work to make the island even more appealing to the visitor.

While hundreds of thousands of cruise passengers is great, the per passenger spend while on the island is even more important and that’s something Antigua needs to work on to compete with what the passengers have already experienced and spent their money on in the Bahamas, Dominican Republic, USVI, St. Maarten, etc. before they arrive here.

  2. Wow, great initiative, the plans for expanding cruise tourism in Antigua and Barbuda sound exciting! I’m impressed by the government’s partnership with Global Ports Holding and their ambitious goal of reaching 2 million visitors.

Upgrading our port facilities and making the visitor experience even better is sure to bring more cruise ships our way, which means more people getting to know and love our beautiful islands! 😍🚢

With more visitors, we’ll see a boost in spending at local businesses, and tour operators will benefit too.

It’s a win-win situation for everyone! As long as we work together and keep the authentic charm of Antigua and Barbuda alive, I’m confident that we can make our mark as a top cruise destination in the Caribbean.

  3. Westside that is incorrect according to government estimates. The number of tourists for 2024 was 1.4 million. You might want to check these statistics for yourself.

  4. @Victor Browne: Here is what the government announced last week:
