Antigua and Barbuda Workers’ Union Re-Elects Executive Team at 57th Annual Delegates Conference

The Antigua and Barbuda Workers’ Union (ABWU) proudly announces the re-election of its Executive Committee during the Union’s 57th Annual Delegates Conference held this past Sunday and Monday. This dedicated leadership team will serve the union’s membership for the next two years, reaffirming its commitment to advocating for workers’ rights and promoting equitable labour practices.

The re-elected Executive comprises:

General Secretary: David Massiah (unopposed)

President: Kem Riley

First Vice President: Hazel Luke (unopposed)

Second Vice President: Monique James-Roberts

Treasurer: Fernando Samuel

Trustees: Roumelia Daniel, Everlie Simon, and Eugene Hurst

In addition to these positions, the Executive Committee will include a floor member from each of the union’s ten sections: Aviation and Airlines, Administrative and Clerical, Banking and Insurance, Commerce and Retail, Distribution and Manufacturing, Hotels, Restaurants and Catering, Telecommunications, Transport, Utilities, and General Workers. The President of the Youth Arm will also hold a seat on the Executive Committee.

The Conference was held under the theme “Climate Action: The Agenda for Trade Unions Now,” highlighting the pressing need for unions and workers to be involved in shaping national policies and initiatives to address the climate crisis.

In his closing remarks, General Secretary Sen. David Massiah emphasized the crucial responsibility entrusted to the incoming executive. “We must send a firm indication to the Government that unions and workers must be included in deliberations on climate action,” he stated. He further urged the government to release the report from the recent SIDS Conference and to establish a National Task Force on Climate Action to ensure comprehensive engagement on these vital issues.

Another significant outcome of the conference was the passing of three resolutions developed during the ABWU’s inaugural Women’s Conference held in July. These resolutions include:

1. Prioritizing mental health support in collective bargaining agreements.
2. Establishment of an Annual Women’s Conference each July.

• Development of a comprehensive policy addressing maternity, menstruation, and menopause.
