Delegates from across the region will converge in Antigua and Barbuda for the International Transport Workers Federation (ITF) Caribbean Workshop on Prospects and Challenges for Tourism Industry Workers and their Unions in a Post-Covid Period.
The Antigua and Barbuda Workers’ Union (ABWU), which is an affiliated member of the ITF, will host the three-day workshop from 4th – 6th April 2022.
Participants will discuss and map the impacts of the Covid-19 Pandemic on tourism and transport workers’ livelihoods across the Caribbean.
The gathering also aims to present the ITF’s global strategy to strengthen unions and grow membership, particularly in the tourism industry.
General Secretary of the ABWU, David Massiah, who also serves as the Global President for the ITF’s Tourism Section and Sub-Regional Coordinator for the Caribbean, says the workshop presents “an opportunity for us in the Caribbean to reevaluate our position following the Covid19 Pandemic.”
Massiah adds that the workshop is also a strong demonstration of the ITF’s support for the region as an international body.
Facilitators for the workshop will include Daniel Hawkins, from ITF’s Rio de Janeiro’s office, as well as Rhea Chatterjee and Shorna McCormack from ITF’s London office.
The workshop participants will include affiliate unions from Jamaica, Barbados, Grenada, St. Lucia, and Dominica which represent workers employed in airports, seaports and the wider tourism industry.
