The Government of Antigua and Barbuda is considering reforms to its energy system, with Utilities Minister Melford Nicholas highlighting both environmental and economic benefits.
Speaking on Pointe FM alongside Prime Minister Gaston Browne, Nicholas pointed to Barbuda’s hybrid solar system as a model. Introduced after Hurricane Irma in 2017, the system powers the island by day with solar energy, reducing reliance on fuel-powered engines to the evenings.

Nicholas said the approach has cut fuel use on Barbuda by about 24%. Applying a similar system in Antigua, he added, could save the Antigua Public Utilities Authority millions in fuel costs and lower rates for consumers.

The minister stressed that shifting the energy mix would not only support the country’s goal of carbon neutrality by 2040 but also shield households from global fuel price shocks.
“There is an economic imperative,” Nicholas said. “Every time we burn fossil fuels, we are contributing to the same climate change problems we are trying to solve.”

What a joke this is as they will never diversify as they have to protect the mighty Hadeed family who are making millions from their power plants. Right now they are four wind generators laying in the bush at Crabbs which were never installed as this would take millions out of hands of the HADEED’s and save the poor people of this country with electric bills.
Hybrid systems sound great, but maintenance and reliability must be guaranteed.
About time! Antigua can’t keep spending $180 million on fuel every year. Solar is the way forward.
thats a lie melford is talking, because the agreement with Hadeed is signed that whether apua use the power or not they still have to pay that set figure, and no penalty for the hadeeds, if their plant break down and we even fix wadadli power plant which is antiguas own abondoned by the Gaston ant the ALP and apua G.M and elecricity manager the hadeeds still get paid, or it will be a court matter like they did baldwin spencer. so there is no savings to the customers what so ever. so if you run your hose on 80% solar power APUA going start estimate you with the highest peak of your historical billing to make up for shortfall of revnue to pay the hadeeds and staff salaries and loans obligations.
