Antigua and Barbuda is ramping up its crime-fighting efforts by considering new legislation that would empower police to monitor electronic communications and enhance their ability to gather electronic evidence.
Information Minister Melford Nicholas announced these plans in response to a recent surge in criminal activities.
He highlighted upcoming discussions with the Attorney General about lawful intercept legislation, which would establish clear guidelines for telecommunication operators.
The government is also exploring international cooperation, including the Budapest Convention, to access data stored abroad, aiming to prevent criminals from using social media as a safe haven.

Medford the ridiculous will do nothing.
I am opposed to this. It goes against the constitution that allows me to be secure in my property. To monitor me when they see fit goes against that right

I fully support this! It is about time we take proper intelligence procedures… those who do nothing wrong have nothing to worry about…

This is why our Prime Minister is the greatest thing to have ever happened to this country! He has invested more into national security than any other prime minister in history!

Here we go again. The constitutional right to privacy is under assault and must be repelled with every fibre of our national being.
Who advises the government on these matters? Is nothing sacred in this country?
I am an old man and the commonsense I have gathered up over the 74 years of my life, together with my understanding of the rights and freedoms of the citizens of Antigua and Barbuda, guaranteed by the supreme law of the land, convinces me that every member of the government needs to have their head examined.
Mr. Melford Nicholas, you will recall that your essay, “The Three-legged-stool of the ALP Government” which you penned while we were both colleagues at Cable and Wireless, and when you still possessed a conscience, would have frowned on the suggestion you are now putting forward. What, in the Name of God, has happened to you? You have become your opposite.
There are three things we do not wish or want for our beloved country: a police state, an administration that spies or eavesdrops on its citizens and a dictatorship, benign or otherwise.
Your assinine suggestion to surveil citizens’ electronic communications is as backward and egregious as the government’s decision to legalize the use and cultivation of marijuana in this State. The latter has clearly eroded the peace and security of the nation and benefited none. Successive administrations have all but guaranteed that Antigua and Barbuda will go to Hell in a handbasket, based on the unwise decisions that have been made over the decades, all in the name of acquiring or consolidating a political hedgemony over the lives of the general populace, while those in power accumulate wealth that cannot be legitimately accounted for. May God help us, for it is indisputable that we seemingly cannot help ourselves.
My urgent plea to Mr. Melford Nicholas and the rest of his associates in government can be summed up in three words: have a heart.
Safer with Labour, eh? Some of the worst atrocities I read about happened under Labour. What some of y’all are backing will eventually come back to bite y’all in the behind.
Y’all are being led down the path of totalitarianism and look, some of you are applauding it. This is how they bring in the NWO — strip you of something here and there while making you think it’s for your protection. #gaslighting!
Once you willingly give up rights you are unlikely to ever get them back. Becareful what you wish for!
