For many retirees, the Caribbean promises sun, beaches and a slower pace of life. But choosing where to settle also depends on cost of living, healthcare and resilience during hurricane season.

Antigua and Barbuda is emerging as a strong option.

According to Global Citizen Solutions, monthly non-rent expenses average about US$577—among the lowest in the region.

By contrast, the Bahamas ranks among the most expensive places to live worldwide.

The twin-island nation also offers variety beyond its 365 beaches.

Antigua is home to Nelson’s Dockyard, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as well as hiking trails and snorkelling spots.

Barbuda adds the draw of pink sand beaches stretching for miles.

With most of the country’s 94,000 residents living on Antigua, retirees are likely to base themselves there, using Barbuda for quieter escapes.

Affordable living, walkable streets in St John’s and accessible healthcare add to its appeal.

  1. Affordable now but will it continue to be when /if big spending outsiders flood the country? You know….like they did in Mexico.

  2. Interesting average monthly non rent expenses being $577 USD when minimum wage is $400 XCD I wonder what’s the average rent. Also what does accessible healthcare means?

And the walkable city have definitely seen better days which currently has so many more closed/abandoned buildings, smelling air and dirty streets/gutters

  3. Antigua ah one ah de most expensive place in de entire Caribbean. I have seen many times people come for vacation and complain about the exorbitant prices especially in the supermarkets, our business people are vampires they will suck your last drop of blood. Who ever came up with this needs to wheel and come again

  4. “Walkable streets in St John’s …” For retirees!!! 🤣

Walking through Town is even testing for the able-bodied.

As soon as I read “affordable living” and “accessible health care”, I knew this writer didn’t have a clue. Tarl!

The person who wrote this misleading retirement guide was obviously someone who either just vacates here on the rare occasion, or is a Caucasian wannabe writer who was looking at photographs from abroad to make a likkle money.

Not a damn clue – pure guess work it seems.

  5. The person who wrote this doesn’t have a clue about life and living in Antigua he needs to do more research and come again. That individual was probably in a drunken stupor

  6. Tout – verb
Touted – past tense, past participle.

Meaning – attempt to sell (something) typically by pestering people in an aggressive or bold manner.

To those individuals who have access to family and healthcare abroad, and can easily migrate to and fro just like the wealthy snow birds, you’re damn skippy it’s a great place to retire for the 1% of humans who control the wealth.
I thought that by now we’d be flooded with billionaires from Africa living in retirement at Africa Town, at willouby bay.

  7. I would take sun sea sand and hurricane everyday over America hard life. Then again on the salary we living on not too many of us look forward to retirement
